OT: Anyone in DC area?

  • Hey guys,

I'm thinking about accepting a job when I leave Afghanistan working up in the DC area. The job itself is the DIA on Boling Air Force Base and I'm trying to figure out the best area to live. I dont want a SUPER long commute, but I dont want to pay way too much to live too close to DC ($2200 is the max at what I'm looking at for a house/townhouse). Anybody got any suggestions? I've been looking in Chantilly and in Manassas/Centreville area, and a little in Springfield, but I wanted to know if any of you guys had any suggestions. I know of the bigger towns in the DC metro area, but I was wondering if any of you guys had any "insider" areas i dont know about.

Thanks for any help if anybody knows!

  • Purcellville, VA
    Frederick, MD
    McLean,VA
    Herndon, VA

Try some of those. They are nice areas not too far outside of DC

  • BuckShot,

If you have family, you might want to try Bowie, Greenbelt, Beltsville, Laurel, Upper Marlboro and Fort Washington are good areas. DC does have very good mass transit so you may want to look at that when making a plan. Good luck if you decide to take it.

No offense but MD is inferior to Va and DC. All the taxes of DC with none of the allure.

Buckshot, I'll give you a full rundown over PM when I get to work.

  • ODA,

Thanks for the insight. I was actually looking more for something in VA, but i'll definitely check those areas out.

  • I live in Ashburn and love it. You should be able to find a townhouse here for that amount of $$$. However, if you are commuting to MD everyday, could be a long ride in DC traffic. If you have kids, and schools are a concern, generally Loudoun County, Fairfax County and Bethesda schools are considered best (to my knowledge).

  • Yea the commute to Boling is what worries me the most, but from what i've been looking at Springfield, and maybe parts of alexandria, are about as close I can get and still get a decent area, decent place, and a decent price.
