I was in the car yesterday around 5:00 Pm and Bill King was on the radio bc of the ncaa tourney..... He had a caller ask him why Illinois can't find a quality coach that wants to come there....
When Bill King was answering the question, he compared the Illinois Bball job and their current search to the UT job and the search that resulted in Dooley being hired.... He also said Dooley only got hired bc of his last name and bc he has a good agent.....
I kind of understand what he was saying, but i don't understand how you can compare UT football to Illinois Bball... Illinois bball isn't a top 25 job or brand.... Illinois bball is also probably the #6 brand in the big 10 (MSU, OSU, Wisco, Purdue, Indiana)......
I know Tennessee has been down in football, but historically UT football is a top 10 brand nationally and is the #2 brand in the SEC historically....
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?????

I wouldn't look to much into it. Everyone has their own opinion and all of them will not be logical. I agree with you btw. There is no comparison even though we have been down, maybe he was talking about both programs being down right now. We are historically a much better program than Illinois bball.

I heard it too and while I wasn't crazy about the comparison, he did stress that it was apples and oranges. I believe he even mentioned that historically UT was a top 10 program. I think the point he was trying (somewhat feebly) to make is that sometimes a program/coaching job gets labeled as being a tough gig and schools have a hard time attracting candidates. Hard to argue that wasn't true about UT at the time of Dooley's hiring. I think that whether Dooley survives or not, he's going to leave the program in infinitely better shape than it was when he got here.

Well, this won't be a popular post but there are many in the media who agree with King. And let's face it, if his name was Ralph Faust (my junior high school coach) instead of Derek Dooley what qualifications would he have had to move from Louisiana Tech to the "#2 brand in the SEC historically"?
That's not to say he won't win and have a great career, but I've always thought his name, lineage and connections helped him get this job.
