OT -Braves

  • One of the power rankings came out yesterday, and had the Braves listed 2nd behind the Nats. I'm a fan, but was surprised to see that. Do they deserve it? I'm stoked about baseball this season.

Honestly, no. Right now there are too many big holes in a lineup that's missing the 2 most consistent hitters from a season ago. With the additions of the Uptons, the Braves are no doubt a powerhouse but if our Starting rotation under achieves like last year I got a feeling it could be a long June and July. I love my Bravos, but with question marks on Simmons, both Uptons, Uggla, and McCann I can't justify putting them at 2nd behind a heavy Dodgers or Angels.

    Talon

  • Totally agree. Until uggla can show that he can hit for average and until we see if BJ will produce and have no off the field issues it's hard to put the braves that high. Pitching should be there and the bullpen will be lights out. Once we get beachy back we should make a push for 1st in our division but the Nats are strong.

    UTvols365

  • I tend to agree. Simmons is the key in my opinion, as I think he's our leadoff guy. My hope is the Uptons motivate each other and Heyward benefits from his outfield mates. Pitching should he great, so no trouble there.

  • Uggs is a big question mark. If he is ripping the cover then the braves will be fantastic

  • When our offense is clicking, we're a pretty unbeatable team. When that happened last year we would go on streaks where it seemed like we were putting 7-8 runs up a night. So if uggla and j-hey can be more consistent we should have a great year. You could probably add McCann to that group after last year, too

  • They don't deserve it yet, but quite honestly, they'll be that good eventually. But our pitching will keep us in games that some nights we won't have score than 2 or 3 runs and we'll win. Our offense has enormous potential, and combined with our pitching and lights out bullpen, yeah I can see us being top 2 or 3. But we have to let the season play out. Man I can't wait for baseball!!

    bleedorange1899

  • Trust me, the Braves will be there in the end. Yes, they will strike out a lot, but it will be like the good old days with 3-run homers flying out. Look at all the guys with power-- Uggla, McCann, both Uptons, Heyward, Freeman and Juan Francisco. He will play a lot at third and he has been smokin' in winter league. Simmons is an emerging star at short.

Braves will have the best outfield in baseball and the best bullpen. Put that together with an excellent rotation and you've got a bigtime contender.

  • I didn't think the Upton's were classified as power hitters. I could be wrong on this but I never really though of either of them as the power hitters in the lineup. That being said Atlanta has added some quality bats to the lineup this season. The Upton's both have decent lifetime averages one is around .235 and the other is around .255 plus the addition of Chris Johnson at third who bats around .250 as well. So with these additions to Heyward, McCann, Freeman, Uggla and Simmons we should be very difficult to pitch to, not to mention scheme against.

I am really looking forward to this season, this team hopefully will play with a chip on its shoulder all season considering they were only one game better than the year before. Frank Wren made some nice additions to the club and has really put together a group of guys that certainly has the ability to really do something special. The key will be to get them hitting on all cylinders come playoff time.

This should be a great baseball season. Go Braves!!!

Uggla sucks so bad! I'm sorry but I broke 3 TV remotes last season because of him. I say trade him or something.

.220 and 19 homers last year was his worst season by far. In 6 years though he is a .250 hitter with 209 home runs

Justin has hit more than 25 homers twice in his career. B.J. hit 28 last year.

That's good enough for me to call them power hitters, though obviously the long ball isn't their whole game.

My point was the Braves will have a lot of guys who can go deep, as opposed to the last few years when their power was lacking.

As someone else said here a couple of weeks ago, no knock on the Braves, but they don't have the best outfield in baseball. Mike Trout, Peter Bourjos and Josh Hamilton are the Angels' projected starters in the outfield. Give me those three over the Braves' outfield any day, although the Braves' outfield is very good.

Here's a very detailed, very fair breakdown of this topic from a Braves fan site, which actually happens to reach the same conclusion I did:

No, they're power hitters. These days, unlike the steroid-tainted '90s and early 2000s, anyone who consistently hits more than 20 homers in a season probably should be considered a power hitter. Justin Upton always has been a 20-plus-homer guy, and B.J. Upton recently has become one.

I tend to discount the American League altogether. Any league where pitchers don't have to hit and some guy who doesn't even play defense does shouldn't be classified as playing real baseball.

I think you make a really good point here in regard to the pitching staff. They were really two different staffs last year. The first half they were not very good at all outside of Beachy. The second half they were a whole lot better when Medlen and Maholm joined the rotation and Minor pitches good as well. I don't expect Medlen to be as good as he was at the end of last year, but I think he will still have a good year. With Medlen, Hudson, Minor, Maholm, and Teheran, this should be a decent staff -- probably top ten in baseball.

The lineup has boom or bust potential. Can Heyward continue to progress? Can Uggla and McCann bounce back? Can Simmons handle the leadoff spot? And what do we get with the Upton brothers? A lot of potential in this lineup, but a lot of questions also.

The one that is not a question is the bullpen. Well I guess there is one question. Do we get the first half or second half Venters? I'm going to say the good Venters. If they can get to the 7th with the lead then they will be in very good shape.

All in all I would put the Braves around 7th or 8th overall at this point. I would put the Giants and Cardinals 1 and 2. Not due to superior talent, but because these two teams know how to win and the get more out of their clubs than anybody. Then I would go: Washington, Detroit, The Dodgers, Angels, Reds, and then the Braves. The Braves could easily move up, but at this point in time I think this is where they fall. Sorry for the long post!

Ha! I hear you on that, and Wes would agree with you, for what it's worth. I definitely prefer National League baseball, but I can't discount the American League altogether since, you know, there's probably more overall talent there than in the National League.

Best Bullpen in Baseball and the parts to have best Outfield along with a deep group of starters gives the Braves a chance to be great. As a fan I hope we live up to the billing, but we will need to replace Chipper and fill lineup holes to make a deep playoff run

Braves fan but I got more respect for AL baseball, why do NL pitchers need a free out every ninth batter?

I look at it the other way around: Why can't AL pitchers be actual baseball players and hit for themselves? And why can't AL DHs put on a glove and play the other half of the game?

  • I think with a solid rotation and bullpen yes it close. I hope the Upton twins improve the offense. I think the lost of Jason B is going to be big. Would love to see a key infielder added or at least a star #1 pitcher emerge in the rotation.

NL pitchers do that and still can't hit. At least AL pitchers face nine real batters. Pitchers will never hit, ever. Fill that spot with a real hitter. No freebies.

Some NL pitchers actually can hit. And it's a more satisfying game with more strategy involved - pinch-hitting, double switches, bunting - with the pitcher in the lineup, in my opinion.

  • I love the Braves. I've followed them since they moved to Atlanta. We were living in B'ham at the time and drove over for two game weekend sets several times that summer. Torre, Aaron, Boyer, Alou, Carty and Cepeda. It was the era of all offense and weak pitching in those days. I was kid, but still remember the beer vendor shouting, "buy two and the Hammer will hit one for you".

Here's hoping this year's edition can win 100 and get a ring in the post season. I have some reservation about the line up of free swingers. They may win a lot in blow out fashion and frustratingly lose several low scoring close ones. I doubt we see much small ball.
