OT Charles Barkley on Philly Radio...

  • Well today Kobe Bryant said that this team could beat the 92 Dream Team. Well Charles was posed the question on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly. His response was , "Besides Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron, there isn't another player on this team that would make the 92 Team"

So I thought about it, and I tend to agree. I am not counting Christian Laetner either. Maybe Chris Paul, but I am not taking him over Magic or Stockton. So I bring it to the board, could any other players besides those 3 make the dream team squad.

  • I like Kobe, but might be the most ridiculous thing he's ever said.

  • Right now I don't if I would put kobe on it...I would put kobe 5 years ago but not present day kobe. That 92 team was just too good.

  • Charles is pretty much right on this. Charles is awesome!

He's wrong. First after Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, and Durant would be the next three best players. Magic and Larry were both past their prime and all three were better than Barkley. Carmelo, Paul, Williams, Love, and Griffin would make it over Mullins. This conversation changes if Rose and Wade were healthy. Drexler nor Stockton would make it over either. I actually take Paul over Stockton.

This It wouldnt be close. Maybe the '12 starters could keep it a game, but the Dream Team's dang back ups had some of the best players of all time. No way the entire roster of that team could have lost a game. Not even with D-Wade or Rose

  • Another big difference between the 1992 and 2012 teams is that the '92 squad had a chip on their shoulder because of the US team's recent history and a lot of people felt that the pros shouldn't be taking spots away from deserving college players. This 2012 squad is coming off the 2008 gold medal and 2010 world championships, and seems to suffer from the same overconfidence that hurt the 2004 team in Athens. The 2008 "redeem" team would be a better comparison to the '92 squad for this reason.

  • regardless of the redeem team or the dream team... It is incoherent to act as if this current team could not at the least compete with that dream team. I'm sorry. I grew up watching those dream team members other than maybe Bird and Magic. But today's athletes are overall bigger, stronger, faster, and combine that often more talented. I'm not sure if they would have beat them. But for people to think that Kobe is an idiot well that makes them an idiot because they apparently have no idea how things progress in life. The bottom line is these athletes today are fantastic and it is not laughable and possible accurate to say that they could beat the dream team

    coachingwiz

  • Barkley is dead on esp if Larry was healthy........4 guys max make that team.

Kobe should have said its the best team ever since THE dreamteam and the starting 5 would be a good game.

I literally typed an entire essay on why this is false. Then due to board error it didn't post and I'm not gonna type it all again-so I'll just hit bullet points.

The Dream Team could play both David Robinson and Pat Ewing at the same time. 2012 can't match. The 4's on the 2012 couldn't hope to back down Barkley or Malone. Lebron and Melo would be stuck playing offense against a much taller 5 or a much heavier 4, and then would be stuck defending a 4 or reaching out the the 3 point line to defend a 3(Larry Bird,Chris Mullins), leaving Tyson Chandler all alone in the middle. Kobe and Durant would match up with MICHAEL JORDAN and CLYDE DREXLER. They may get their points on offense, but niether could hope to defend Jordan or Drexler. Now, Lets say Chris Paul and John Stockton cancel each other out. That leaves Westbrook and Williams to match up with MAGIC FREAKING JOHNSON. Nope, Dream Team wins again.

Now lets consider that, on average, the Dream Team is a full inch and a half taller than the 2012 team. The 2012 would have to run the entire game to take advantage of their speed and athleticism(which maybe they can do against other teams in the modern era), but good luck forcing the Dream Team to should sub 40% and then collecting enough defensive rebounds to really start a fast paced offense.

Now lets take the absolute best line up the 2012 team can throw out: Paul, Bryant, Durant, James, and Chandler(Maybe, MAYBE Melo at 4 and Lebron at 5, but no way Lebron could gard a 7+footer). There are any number of ways the Dream Team could defend this:Johnson, Jordan, Bird, then a 4(Barkley,Malone), or a 5(Robinson, Ewing), both 5s at once, or both 4s and make Lebron shoot 3s all day.

Its like a game of chess being played between a side with the normal pieces and a side made entirely of Queens, Rooks, and Bishops.

Please don't call me an idiot again.

  • If you think that these two teams would not compete against each other then there is idiocy in the statements. I'm sorry but first of all obviously with all the injuries to this current team, the person that made the 2008 redeem team remark might have a point. But even this team I understand the post advantage but I do not think that the Dream team is more athletic.

I'm sure anyone over 30 would almost be big time Dream Team supporters. And I am too. I love that team. I think that team is great. I even might give them the edge overall with the current injuries. I'm just saying that I can' believe how many people want to act like it is not even close between these teams. Its like people don't see that things change over the year. I just find that current athletes are getting better and better overall.

For the record I'm 23....I just love the NBA. And maybe Lebron is more athletic than anyone on the Dream Team. Fair. He is more athletic than...well, just about anyone. Maybe Chris Paul is more athletic than John Stockton. But, I really, really think you are selling a whole bunch of guys short. And regardless of pure athleticism it comes down to who can play ball. And, I'm sorry Kevin Love,Tyson Chandler, Andre Iguadala, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Russel Westbrook, and Deron Williams are not better basketball players than anyone on the Dream Team except Laettner.

And injuries don't matter. He said this team could beat that one. Not the 12 best players in the NBA on a day when all are at their peak could beat the Dream Team.

  • surrender Tyson Chandler is the ONLY center on the team.......that wouldnt get it done.

    SamVolsam

  • I can't believe this is even a debate. They play 5 games, avg margin of victory is at least 20. That team had like 9-10 hall of famers. Kobe, LeBron, Durant and who else on this team? Besides Magic and Bird, the rest of those players were in there prime.

    wataugavol

  • The most important question would be: Are we playing 1992 rules? or 2012 rules?

The travel and carry and charge/block have changed immensely since 1992. If you played the old rules, the '92 team would win by 100. If you played the new "Playground/anything goes" rules, I'd have to give the advantage to the 2012 guys.

Along those same generational lines, players today are softies compared to players of the Deeam Team era. Modern post players don't make the cut just because of that. Kobe whines more than a toddler about being fouled. No way he could have handled the Isaiah's and Rodman's of the nineties. I agree with Sir Charles on this one.

  • Thought a bit more about this........rebounding and D is where THE dream team wins this game by 10+. That team had some of the better rebounders at every position on the court and we all know the D was better.
