OT: Days Inn Campus

  • Totally off topic but after reading the thread about a bowl game in Knoxville, decided to ask:

What happened to that Days Inn on campus by the McDonald's and Krystal's? Why did it close?
Is someone looking to put another hotel there?

I spent my last night before entering Hess Hall there with my folks and the hotel was decent.
Never figured out how could such a great location not work for a hotel.
So many schools have an on campus hotel and UT's is closed.
They also used to have tailgate parties there.

  • I remember it when it was a Sheraton when my sister went to UT in the 70's. I graduated in '86 and I think it was a Days Inn by then. Never stayed there, but tailgated and spent a few nights in their "lounge". I heard there was a boutique hotel chain that bought it a couple years ago and was going to rehab it, but nothing ever came of it. It's a shame. Great location and it's become an eyesore. Don't know when the last time you were on campus was, but Krystals is closed now too.

  • My wife worked there in the early 2000's, but to answer your question it had caught fire and just about burnt down. there was supposed to be a rebuilding of the hotel but never came to pass!

  • In those days, back when it was a Sheraton, they had great pre- and post-game parties there. They used to have a one-man band who was truly awesome. I never knew his name.

Krystal is closed also. How does that happen? Doesn't anyone get drunk at 2:00am anymore?

I have no idea how a Krystal on the campus of a school that big closed. Maybe all the smart kids don't party or are much healthier eaters than i ever was.

They were shut down because of health code violations.

  • Was that the one that had a bar called Mom and Pops or Mom and Dads? or something like that. I used to bartend on game days there back in '88. We had a block party and closed the parking lot, and had a one man band.

I don't remember what the bar was called, but the hotel was a block off of Cumberland, behind the Krystal. The hotel had an overhanging entryway, as I recall, and when it rained, the One Man Band and the crowd would pack under cover to party and listen to the music.

They are actually renovating the building now. I'm not sure what hotel chain is moving in, but they've been working on it quite a bit.

Yes - they're just lower than anywhere else... doesn't mean I'll avoid the place when I'm back in town, though...

That's what cookout is for. That place is slammed thru 5 am Friday and Saturday. I haven't talked to a single other student that wasn't happy about Krystal closing. That one was unusually awful for some reason

Yup, that was the place. I would get there about 8:00 am to set up. Then the party would begin a couple of hours before kickoff. When people would leave for the game we would clean up and restock. I would then go to the game, and get there about halfway through the first quarter and watch until midway through the fourth. At which time I would setup for the party after the game. Those were fun times.

I lived at Lakecourt (which is a condo building now) behind McDonalds, which was also right beside the Days Inn. Will never forget the night when a room in that Days Inn caught fire. I want to say it was around 02 or 03, but it burned for about 7 hours; blazes out the this one window like in a movie or something. There was so much smoke and water damage, it was condemned shortly thereafter. Now it looks like a gloified cell phone tower. Anyways, I remember vividly watching that thing burn....

Sounds like that wasn't the best work of the Knoxville FIre Department.

  • I like to think that me and some friends were one of the people responsible for the Krystal walk up window as before it was there we used to go through the Drive Thru pretending we were in a car lol
