OT: Directv or Dish?

  • I tired of Charter Cable raising my rates every 2 or 3 months. I'm paying $170 for Internet and cable. Bout time I made the switch. Opinions?

    I have Dish and really like it except for one thing. It seems they are always in a p&^%$* contest with some of the networks. As of yesterday they were going to drop AMC which has the Walking Dead. I love the show and know some of the folks producing and directing it since I have a couple of rental houses in the town where it's filmed. A few months ago they were going to drop channel 17 the superstation here in Atl. Other than that the logic of the lists and other navigation works for me and they are for the most part a reasonable bargain. If they don't get this AMC thing settled I will switch to Direct after 8 years with Dish.

  • I've tried Charter, Dish and DirecTv. I refuse to go back to Charter for anything other than Internet (only option). Dish was good but the I lost signal with every storm (may have just poor installment...I don't know). I switched to Directv prior to last football season to get the free Sunday Ticket and I have ZERO complaints. I don't lose signal and I get all the programming I need. Plus ST is only $199 this year.

  • I have direct tv and have not had any issues with it. I did want to switch to AT&T but it isnt available in my area yet. But I do think direct tv is better than dish network IMO. I've had both and like direct better.

  • I have DirecTV and love everything about it. I have good signal strength given where my house sits, so even when it pours I still get a fine signal. Have two HD DVRs.

    Only time it blips/flashes is if there is a ton of big lightning strikes, etc. Goes out for maybe a total of 3 hours a year. In all honesty, though, those are probably the three hours a year you most want it to see what's going on. We got a weather radio to take care of that.

  • I have Directv and like it for the most part. I lose signal in most storms, and they sure seem to nickel and dime you A LOT! The billing seems shady to me and the rates constantly change. The good news is...I can watch the Insanity workout infomercial at any time of day on about 6 different channels, so there's that! Ha ha

    Yes. I have HD DVR in two rooms but just one box, it's great and I have tons of recording time. I am recording 4 shows back to back right now and two are running simultaneously on TV 1 and TV 2. No issues with the technology and the customer service has been really good.

    I do have the HD DVR. Both have pros and cons. With Dish I could record two things at a time. However, I had to be watching one of the programs on one of my two DVRs. The reason For this is it records a program on TV 2. If you record another program it recorded it on TV 1. Thus, if you were home and wanted to watch it had to be one of these programs. Two things to note: I've seen commercials for the Hopper on Dish and this was not available until after we left and we only have 2 TVs so I don't know what the effect would be if you added a third. With Directtv you can also record 2 programs at once, however it only ties up my main TV ( again you have to watch one of the programs). My second TV is still free. On the downside while I can watch recorded TV on my second TV (whole home I think they call it) I don't have DVR features (pause, rewind, etc...) on my second TV. This however could have been resolved by simply upgrading to a DVR for that room as well. Hope this help!

  • I work for AT&T. I install U-Verse everyday here in Huntsville. If it is available where you live there isn't anything better on the market. Whole home DVR and you can record up to 4 shows at a time.

    Was raised on Directv. Set up the bundle stuff and pricing went up. Moved to Dish with the bundle and pricing went up. Just switched back to Directv and saved again. I have a better pricing structure for longer now.

    I said that to say, I love Directv and am thrilled to be back. The bundle pricing with Century Link isn't bad, and I think you have that available in your area (if you are still in the Johnson City area). I'm Gate City myself.

  • I work in the telecommunications industry (fiber-to-the-home) so all of these are my competitors. But I would tell you get ATT U-Verse if you can, then Dish, then DirecTV if you must. The DVR on Dish is second to none.

    I check Directv website and it says I can record 5 shows at once. Doesn't mention anything about being able to watch other programming while recording

    Hmmm...I'll have to check on that next time I'm on the computer. They may offer a newer DVR unit from the one I got last year.

  • Just a reminder, though I'd never use this as a sole reason to pick my service either (I have Time Warner here in Kansas City), but, for the record, DISH is a big donor to UTAD. However, they did just drop AMC which, if I were a customer, I'd be at the door with shovels pitchforks about.

    I always liked the service with Direct better.

I am with Time Warner Cable and I call every Nov. and renegotiate my bundle, cable( HD DVR), internet and phone. I'm getting a much better deal this year than a couple of years ago.

    I've done that twice over the last three years.

    Their HD seems to freeze at times, a lot here lately. I believe their HD signal is 1080i and the satellite is 1080p, which is blue ray quality.

    I love the Internet service and will keep it.

    This is true, however, no channel actually provides television content in 1080p. The only content available from any provider right now in progressive scan is Video On Demand content. Unless you order movies on demand, this shouldn't be a major factor in your decision.

    They do go to war with the networks, but they do it to keep the rates as low as possible. They settled with Peachtree TV and I predict they will eventually do the same with AMC.

    Charlie Ergen is the former CEO/Co-founder of Dish, he graduated from OR in 71 and graduated from UT, actually played basketball for a year or two at UT. I graduated from OR in 70, have not seen or talked to Charlie in a long time, used to be a great guy and I am sure he still is. I have had directv for 7-8 years now and the only complaint I have is we lose signal during storms.
