OT: Directv or Dish?

  • wataugavol said...

I check Directv website and it says I can record 5 shows at once. Doesn't mention anything about being able to watch other programming while recording

So I checked their website. The receiver I have is the "HD DVR". I see the receiver that allows for 5 hours of recording is "home media center HD DVR". It says it's only available to new customers and existing customers will have to wait (I hate it but I understand why they do that). Personally, I like Directv's DVR service better (especially if you have a receiver that will allow it to record 5 shows at a time). Again, my only complaint is that, unlike Dish, you have to get a DVR receiver for every room you want the ability to pause or rewind live TV. That is, assuming this new DVR doesn't fix that issue

Agree with your statement on New customers.

I completely understand the offers that companies put out there to draw in New customers. I've always thought these companies would be better off if they spent just as much time retaining their loyal customers as well. At least making available the same equipment, etc.

  • One thing I hate with direct TV and dish is they contract out their techs. So their customer service isn't that great. Well in my experiences they have been a nightmare.

  • Grew up on cable. Got to UT for college and had Comcast (worst company ever!!!) digital cable w/ HD-DVR box throughout college. Moved to Indiana after college, had their local cable company with digital cable and HD-DVR box. Hated all of it. I always wanted a satellite but I could never get past the signal stigma, you know, if it thinks about raining you lose signal. I recently moved to northeast Georgia and I live in the foothills of the Smokey's and we get serious lightning storms here. Walked into the DirecTV place to discuss it because the cable company here was practically non-existant. Decided to go with it because I've never been a big fan of Dish (even though they support our Vols) and I've never been happier with a tv service provider. I've got an HD-DVR box in my living room and two more HD boxes throughout the house, I've got the second highest channel package you can get plus ALL the movie channels and I pay about 125 per month. I've lost signal twice since I've been here for a total of about 20 minutes, and we've had some pretty serious storms. DirecTV offers more 1080P movies than anyone that I know of, they have a few 3D channels such as ESPN, and maybe even Discovery as well as a bunch of rentable movies, (to my knowledge the only company that has 3D) and they aren't in any disputes with any networks like Dish is with AMC (the best drama network on tv). They are the only ones who offer NFL Sunday Ticket which I will be subcribing to and they have a ton of on-demand programming. IMO, no one else comes close to competing with DirecTV. Sorry for such a long-winded post but just wanted to cover everything.

Must be alot of hate for cable with 74 upvotes.

i am actually very satisfied with Comcast. I do have to call the customer retention department about once a year and make sure they keep me at a good rate. I have cable, internet and phone(for work) and i don't think that any one else can beat the price i get for all the services. The biggest complaint i have is the monthly cost of an HD DVR, they kill you with those rental fees.

  • Hey Wataugavol,

I was in your position about 5 years ago. I chose Dish over DirectTV mainly because of price. Dish gives you up to four rooms unlike DirectTV which I believe charges $5 extra per additional room. Also, my wife is latin and she enjoys some of the latin programming. In all fairness, I think DirectTV has a better sports package when you look at all of the different sports. For what I like to watch, Dish was fine. I have the HD DVR setup in my house and all of the family likes it. My kids like the DVR as much as I do.
One piece of advice I have is to check out the line of sight for your dish. If your house has a ton of tall trees in the way of the dish, reception will be an issue. You want open sky for your dish. I live in New England and I only lose reception after about 4 inches of snow.
I almost forgot. If you have a Blockbuster subscription, it can get bundled with the Dish subscription since Dish bought Blockbuster. Basically, I get the same blockbuster subscription for $10 from Dish, saving me about $15.
    Good luck with your decision.

Not to be overly promoting here, but Dish has virtually every channel in HD. All its movie channels are HD, as are the PPV channels.

  • Directv by far. I have two HD/ HD DVR and Ive had them since 2006. No complaints here. I have had them in three different states and each place was very good.

  • Anyone read the posts from the Mich State site? Pretty entertaining stuff. Looks like the goober that spoiled the gag is one of their mods. They're tough on they're mods too. Makes you appreciate what we got here. Gotta admit though, that's a pretty good idea they came up with.
