OT: Family lost our dog last week...

    I have a salt and pepper miniature schnauzer and she may be the smartest dog I've ever had.. She acts a little crazy when she's alone and chews on everything but she's still my buddy.. My family had to put down their 15 year old chocolate lab... It sucks to lose a friend of that many years.

    We could tell Graci to go find her ball or toy in "the bedroom" or in the "hall" and she would know where to go. Last trick she learned was to "speak". Lost her hearing last years so she couldn't perform much but if I sat down on the floor and put my hand out she'd still shake it.

  • Most of us men try to be strong and not show a lot of emotion, but I will tell you that when I loose my dog I will cry like a baby. Sorry for your loss.

    Yes. My mom said my dad had been crying over Graci. He loved her. When she started declining in the last weeks he would come home and gently pet her and ask "how's my baby girl?" She loved him too. He let her wander around on walks in more places than mom. :) and he is the one who picked her out.

  • So, so sorry about Graci. Our miniature schnauzer, Dollar, turned 16 in December, and he's slowed down a lot the last couple of years... he's still spry enough to beg with the big boys, though.

  • So sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I'm a man and I am not the least bit ashamed to admit that I cried like a baby when I lost my dog, Sable. I got her for my 10th birthday in 1999, and she died on my 21st birthday in 2010. She was my best friend in the world and losing her was like losing a family member. It was something that I didn't get over for a very long time. I know how difficult this can be. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

    The photo below was taken of my dog, Sable, on her last Christmas--just about 2 and a half months before she died. She was one of a kind!

  • Thanks for sharing man... I also was around 15 in 1997 and I was raised around dogs my whole life. My parents show Boston Terriers and have also had some ShihTzus . I was around so many and playing college ball that when I was younger I guess I just kinda thought of them as a pack instead of individuals and when one would pass away my Mom would be so torn up about for days and I just didn't have that connect or energy with them that she did so I really didn't get her emotion.

    I have to say in the last 10 years or so I have actually taken a larger roll in taking care (feeding, training etc...) than before. I now know each ones individual personality and quirks and I have seen a few who I have trained and fed every meal(after mom is done) pass away. The thing is, a couple times I spent the entire day and night coddling one in particular and usually bc they were feeling bad or acting strange and I would wake up in the morning and they had passed away.But, I was there telling them they're pretty or just scratching them and telling them how they are loved them before I went to bed...

    So I know now where my Mom was coming from and I KNOW that I made them feel loved and they left with a memory of being loved and it actually gives me a sense of peace. So as this is a sports forum I hope this fits in w the convo.

  • So sorry for the loss of your pet Gracie. I have a Rat Terrier that was also 15 years old in November. It is sad to know that she doesn't have much longer, because her health is falling, but I treasure all the years I had her and all the laughs and enjoyment she gave my wife and I.

    Molly is my dogs name and she loves to shake as well. Very smart dogs and is a better guard dog than my other dog 3 times her size

    Yes. Nothing crossed into our backyard without Graci letting her presence be known. Super protective of my mom. Even when she was pretty much blind and deaf she still somehow could tell when someone was walking down our street.

    I would make Graci "gimmie 5" when something good happened in a UT game. Haha.

  • My girlfriend has a miniature schnauzer named Gracie also. Hers is a darker shade though. She really, really loves her. Gracie hates me though lol. I can only imagine how heart broken she would be if she lost Gracie. Sorry.

  • For some reason I had skipped over this post until now. I then started reading each response and I then knew why. It was increasingly tough to read the posts as my eyeballs would not stop sweating. So, so sorry for your loss. Dogs are the best. Growing up always had outdoor dogs on the farm. Last march got a little chi weenie that someone had dumped. Sure don't understand that. But Daisy has been such a joy for my family. We absolutely love her. She is our first indoor dog. Man she is just so awesome. Look forward to many more good times with her. Once again, my condolences
