OT: Houston's TD that wasn't reviewable...

  • Wow, just saw a very interesting tweet that stated offensive coaches will now throw the review flag, accepting the 15 yard penalty ON THE KICKOFF, to keep their questionable touchdowns from being overturned...

    Thoughts?

  • Saw that too. Bottom line is that the rule is terrible and when stuff like that is being discussed as a strategy, it absolutely has to be changed. And it probably will be, but not until the season is over which doesn't do the Lions much good. So basically, Lions totally got Dooleyed today.

Doesn't fly. If today's review could have helped Houston, the review still would have been conducted. Coaches would not be able to obstruct a review just to damage the other team.

But obstructing the review is exactly what happened...Houston scored, the player was 100% positive down - but it was missed...but that didn't matter right, because in the NFL all scoring plays are reviewed.
Well, it wasn't reviewed only because the Detroit coach was so fired up, he forgot that scoring plays are always reviewed and if he threw the challenge flag (he did) it would be a 15 yard penalty to be assessed on the kickoff.
Lets say next week, there is a player who was running to the endzone, dove in but didnt cross the goaline. The ref signals TD, since it is a scoring play it is auto reviewed...BUT, if the coach is smart enough, they will flip out the challenge flag...taking the 15 yard penalty - while also stopping any review of the play in question. What I am saying is that if a situation occurs now (until they change the rule), coaches can and will throw flags to make plays unreviewable.

  • My (very basic, just formed today) understanding is that if you throw the flag when it's illegal, they do whatever doesn't benefit you. So reviewing it would have had a theoretical chance to benefit Detroit of 50%, assuming it is either called back or a TD (and probably would have) so they didn't review it. However, if Houston tossed it to block the review, it wouldn't work because leaving it has a 100% chance of benefitting them whereas reviewing it would have a theoretically 50% chance, so they'd go with the lowest chance of benefit.
Sorry if that made zero sense, consumed a bit too much tryptophan and not enough nap time to be entirely coherent
