OT: How do you guys feel about this?

  • Agent Orange said...

Not tipping or under tipping is shameful. I teach the youth in our church the value of proper tipping. The pastor in this story should know better. The server gets 18% because that is what is customarily requested. If this pastor feels guilty about giving God less than 18%, then she should give Him more...not the server less. (Render to Caesar that which is Caesar's and to God that which is God's).

It is obvious that if you act this way that it destroys your witness and your message. Any criticism this pastor gets is warranted. She needs to ask for forgiveness and ask Applebee's to give the co-worker their job back. JMO

  • I always leave 20+% as a tip if the service is good, but if it's not I have been known to leave a nickel and four pennies to send the message that "you aren't worth a dime"twocents

Honestly, one of the worst tippers around is Coach Fulmer. During his tenure, he was known to stiff the servers at the Texas Roadhouse he co-owns in Maryville & was "appalled" that my father on law wouldn't do some remodeling work for free. When my f.i.l. Gave him the bill, both Fulmer & wife asked him "don't you know who I am? You should just give this to us no charge."

Wow, a down vote for stating a fact? Get a grip downvoter...

  • Go look at the picture of the bill. The total for food and drink was 34.93. The pastor crossed out the 18% gratuity (about $6) and only paid the 34.93.

St. Louis Applebee’s server fired after posting receipt from disgruntled customer to Reddit - NY Daily News

A former Applebee's server says she was canned from her job after posting a receipt from a customer who stiffed a fellow waitress at a St. Louis location of the restaurant chain.

Btw the way i heard this story was that the server is not the one who got fired... it was a fellow server who took the pic and posted it. Seems very justifiable to me..either way. You just dont embarrass your customers.

In most circumstances I would agree but on this one I have to disagree - an obnoxious a--hole like that deserves to be outed. Especially someone trying to justify it the way she did.

Also, the firing irritated me so much I went to Applebees' corporate site and commented on it. I have never been a fan of the restaurant so this seals it for me - I will never darken the door of one of their restaurants again.

  • Sounds pretty standard behavior for a preacher..

Not knowing the whole story I can only say this. Almost every chain in the country has an 18% gratuity for groups of 8+ due to the time it takes to manage a larger party. It also means the server has less tables to work. That cuts in to their tips. I can read into the note on the receipt 2 ways. Neither way is what I would call "acceptable behavior".

    Sogozit,
I think you might have misunderstood what I was saying. I was saying the server being fired was justifiable.

Yep, read another post then yours and got my wires crossed. Regardless of circumstances, if an employee does something against company policy and gets caught separation is usually a strong possibility ...... Thanks seanbt

Stereotypical answer......my dad is a retired pastor and was/is the most generous man I know, as well many many other pastors still today. He has given very nice cars that were paid off to families and never took a dime. Then bought another car and had to go in debt. He has given more money to help others, including a big tips for servers that he felt needed extra for something they might be going thru. Standard behavior my rear....don't throw all pastors under the bus for the actions of some who don't represent themselves according to God's word. Very disrespectful and uncalled for....imho

Thanks, TNOak, you're right. I hadn't seen the picture, but had just read about the zero in the 'additional tip' area. Thanks for the info - really does make it even worse for the pastor. Ridiculous behavior from her, imo.

  • Messy situation. Poorly handled by the customer and the server. Two wrong's don't make a right, Applebee's did what they should have done. You can't embarrass a customer like that and expect to have a job the next day.

    volfan28

  • See I was thinking the 18% gratuity was included in the $34.93. That's usually the way it works. Most customers don't get to just erase the gratuity.

This is absolutely terrible. I hate to see the server get fired over this, and since I'm a server myself, this whole situation makes me furious. Tip out your servers people! We work really hard. We only make 2.13 an hour and basically depend on our tips to live. If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be eating out.

I think there are two issues here. No - the person should not have left that note (and/or tip).

However, there are plenty of things in my job (and I am sure probably yours as well) that you would like to complain about, or try to embarrass another person publicly about, but you/I don't. You don't put your employer in a no-win situation like this (or you likely get fired). So - while I do not think the diner should have left the message/tip. I don't really have too much of a problem with the server being fired. Probably a good life lesson for the server in that you should likely keep your business life separate from your personal life in this/that regard.

  • It could also be that the server was awful and/or rude. I have had a couple like that in my adult life.

  • Pastor was a jerk for not tipping.

Server absolutely deserved to get firing for posting receipt.

They're both way too upset about $5.

  • First off why would anyone eat at those crappy places...second that's about right from a leach that lives tax free on the word of the Lord...almost 100% of those "preachers" are big hypocrites as there are in the world. Hope he gets fired and has to pay taxes like the rest of us, what a jagoff.

First let's clarify. A pastor is a hired employee just as you and I. They pay taxes just as you and I. The church either handles payroll taxes as a public job, or they issue a 1099. The church organization as a whole is a non profit organization, so the church pays no taxes. If a "pastor" starts his own church without the support of an oralganization, they must file a 501C3 to become tax exempt.

As a pastor myself, I can assure you that I pay plenty of taxes on very little pay... and also tip quite generously... Unfortunately it is true that there are "pastors" who wrongly worship the almighty dollar, the vast majority do not. Hopefully you'll take time this Sunday to go meet one.peace
