OT: Macbooks

  • I owned a Mac in college and graduate school. I loved it, however I sold it a couple years ago, as my work gives us an HP or Dell with their software all over it. The difference is amazing. I'm constantly having problems with the HP, it's slow, and it freezes up regularly. I didn't see a need for two computers, but in hind sight, I wish I would have kept it.

  • I used to be anti-Mac...in the past nothing was compatible and being a Mac it was like speaking English in rural China but now Apple has closed the gap and Macs are very much compatible with what you are used to and they even allow a parallel installation of Windows like someone mentioned.
I started changing my mind about Apple after I got my iPhone earlier this year and since then, my wife got an iPad and we've decided that slowly we'll transition PCs out of our lives...next step, a MacBook for her which will trickle down her iPad to me, then a MacBook for me and last but not least, replacing the PC with a iMac.

  • We went to an iMac desktop with an iPad recently. Great combination for us, but it depends on how and where you will use your computer.

  • I bought an iMac today and had some trouble transfering files from my windows laptop. Still working on getting everything over and getting used to the new system. Hard to break old habits.

I'd recommend checking out Macworld.com, maclife.com, and MacForums.com - they have a wealth of resources for people new to the Mac.

  • Bought an iBook in 2002. Loved it. Bought a MacBook in 2007, loved it more- for the record I gave the iBook to my wife. It's still kicking.

I run Word for work but I find pages much better for any creative document. Same for Keynote and PowerPoint. I often create jpegs of keynote slides because it's the only way to make ppt look good.

It does take transition time, but mostly because it's easier. My philosophy is that PCs are for people who like things to be hard- like to work the puzzle and figure our why something doesn't work a certain way. Macs are for people who want to get things done well and move on with life.
