OT: Maryland to Big 10

Just got a text from ESPN saying this was a done deal. Don't know if I could call it a very smart one. Thoughts?

Probably...don't really know the financial aspect and if its worth the 50 million it will cost them though. FSU and Clemson have both been rumored to leave the ACC which would leave them pretty weak in football. On the basketball side their near equal with a slight edge to the ACC I guess.

Money grab by the Big 10. Whatever financial issues we have they pale in comparison to Maryland. By adding those two teams the Big Ten Network is going to increase revenue by $200 million a year according to reports. This has zero to do with quality football and everything to do with two of the largest cable markets in the country.

If we needed more proof that conference expansion is about money and not quality, this is it. Maryland is not a terrible addition, though not a great one. Rutgers? Just awful.
Pundits say the Big Ten added Rutgers so it could tap into the New York TV market. If I'm a TV executive in charge of negotiating contracts, I'm asking the Big Ten -- who the heck in New York cares about Rutgers? They don't have a significant following in that market, and thus shouldn't be allowed to significantly impact a new TV contract.

Rutgers has a lot of Alum in New York and the NYC market also covers most of New Jersey. It's all about getting the Big 10 network on the tvs in the New York area. It is a big deal for the Big 10 as things stand now. Rutgers is 9-1 so their fan base is all fired up, but let's see how fired up they are In a couple years when they're 3-7 heading into their season finale against Penn State. Big Ten sucks, but it's still a big step up from the Big Least.

Rumor is that Kevin Plank (Under Armour) bankrolled their buyout. Who knows if that's true?

I don't know if he bankrolled it, but Kevin Plan runs the Maryland AD, so there is some UA angle involved.

The value for the Big Ten Network is in the numbers of homes it is, not number of people watching. Cable channels charge a fee per subscriber and they get a higher fee in the Markets of Big Ten areas. This case they added the two massive markets in Northern Virginia/DC and NYC. The SEC is supposedly going this route and this was the major motivator in adding Texas A&M and Missouri.
