OT: Prayers/thoughts for the Old Man Updated 5/2/13

  • I tremendously appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers.

I was asked last night to speak on behalf of the family. I thoroughly enjoyed telling some of my day's stories. It was nice to see some smiles as they connected to stories they had heard before.

It was also nice to see two people I wouldn't have expected. One was probably the most challenging parent I have ever had in youth football, but she and her son came out to pay their respects. The other was a young man that I went to high school with. I've only personally interacted with him once since high school, that was at our reunion a few years ago. He saw the information on Facebook in regards to my dad and came. He came and sat through visitation and the service. I am floored that people I didn't have much interaction with or much respect for came out to support me and my family.

It's cause for reflection, that's for sure.

We are off for a small town in northern Arkansas in a few hours (Success). That's where his wife's family is buried. She had a receipt with his signature on it for two plots there so I have no qualms about it. My family will be placing a memorial stone alongside my mom's resting place.

Afterward, my wife and I will drive to Jonesboro to show off the baby to some family that haven't had a chance to see him.

Again, thanks for letting me vent. I finally got a decent cry in last night. Someone's gonna have to catch me up on the Tennessee win over Kentucky and what this Harlem shake is all about tomorrow.

  • It's been just over a month since he died. My family has taken some serious shots at his wife. She's fired back a few times, though I wouldn't say successfully.

I'd say my sister crossed the line into cyber bullying today, though I'm not sure his wife is intelligent enough to realize that.

His wife's response was to tell me that if I want any of my dad's things, it would cost 30k, cash money.

"You're good for it." Her words.

I had bought him a few signed baseballs the past few years for Father's Day...Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, among others. She told me she could sell them for "7500 to 10000 each" if she wanted, but dad wanted me and my son to have them, so she'd give them to me for the lower rate.

    I sent her this link:

  • I hate to hear this lady is giving you guys so much trouble during this time. That is truly horrible. Just do what is best for your family and leave the rest up to God. Things like this tend to work themselves out one way or the other.

My prayers remain with you and your family.

In the past few weeks, my family has expanded. My step dad had a daughter we didn't know about, an older sister I lived about 7 miles from when I was stationed in Virginia Beach. She found us about a month after my dad passed. Add to the family her daughter as well.

Yesterday we added an older brother who is virtually my neighbor and my niece, a young woman in Little Rock. She's the daughter of my oldest stepbrother. He passed away in 1994.

    Blessed beyond measure.
