I read one suggestion that we could do some retraining of vet's returning home who have no job. I am for it because the shooters need to be stopped. Gun control is not the issue. They have gun control in Europe and the same things happen.

Our school has been on lockdown pretty much all morning. The building I'm in is separate from the main building, and I have to go to the front and check in before I'm allowed in the main office, copy room, etc. I was talking to our school resource officer, and she and I agree, as well as you, Gruden. We need people who are armed and responsible in the school.

I'll just disagree on who will be armed.

I'm a teacher. I'm licensed to carry a firearm. I've been through extensive training to carry it. There aren't many teachers like me, so I think i'm in the minority. Put teachers and administrators through an extensive psychological evaluation yearly, as well as advanced firearm training. Let those who are solid and pass carry a firearm, locked, in a cabinet or on their side.

I've been teaching 2 years. I knew this was the environment I was signing up for. If need be, I would jump infront of a bullet for every single one of my students, some of which may be your student, or like them. I just wish the powers at be would let me have something besides my bare hands to take to the fight.

I'm sure there will be those that say we can't trust some teachers. Thats probably accurate, and I don't disagree. But something different needs to happen.

I would do whatever was needed. Daily, weekly, whatever. I'd feel much safer and I guarantee my students would.

I'm open to just about anything at this point. I'm sure a lot of teacher wouldn't want to carry a gun, but I think i'm ok with those would like to carry.

I was talking to my wife last night and we were relating this to a country like Isreal. I'm not jewish btw, but I do admire how Isreal has been the target of many attacks, so they have significant security at airports, on planes, etc.

If are children are being attacked.....even if it's once every 5 years...that's too much and we need to show the country we take this seriously and will not stand for it.

The cowards that do this crap always kill themselves when they know the police are moving in. How about going ahead and killing yourself in the parking lot when you see three guards at the front of the school.
And I know they could sneak in the back door, a window, etc, but they could be stopped much more quickly.

It's a proven fact that citizens carrying guns helps deter crime. When Florida passed their self defense laws the crimes against people leaving Miami airport dropped drastically. I know you will probably bring up the incident recently in the news but the bottom line is the overall affect has been positive for the citizens. Based on your logic then police officers should not carry guns.

No, that doesn't match my logic at all, police officers should carry weapons because they are law enforcement. They have endured hours upon hours of training and certification on properly cleaning, loading, handling, and storage of a weapon. They have also undertaken numerous hours of rigourous marksmanship classes and have been trained on how to respond, contain, and neutralize random and/or spontaneous hostile threats in a multitude of scenarios including close quarters, crowded public areas, etc. That's why those people carry firearms everyday.

And the last time I checked 'close-quarter combat experience' wasn't one of the required qualifications for a 3rd grade teacher.

I like this idea, too. Do you think it would also a good idea for those who are carrying to not be publicized? This way anyone even contemplating something of this nature may rethink if they know that any and all classrooms they enter could be armed?
Edit: my bad. Responded to 5for3's post. Do like the way things are handled in Irael though.

If I'm not mistaken I think Israel has something in place that every citizen is required to serve in the military men 2 1/2 years and women 1 1/2 years. Can't remember if I read this somewhere or was told by somebody. Now, I know the USA will never adopt this policy but instead of locking up the 17-25 year olds for crimes make them take the option of hard labor or military and learn some discipline,honor, and respect, it might just go a long way.

If only.

I'll take my chances with "likely to have more fire power" at least with an armef guard my or your children would have a punchers chance instead of no chance at all. JMO
