OT-Toomers trees are coming down

  • Just read that they are taking the trees down after the AU spring game. Evidently, whatever Harvey Updyke did they can't fix them. I know we aren't AU fans....especially now with Ford and Lawson....but any destruction of college football tradition and pageantry is terrible.

  • I will probably get hammered for this, but I don't care about the trees. Life sucks sometimes. Plant new trees. Good topic though.

Those trees are to Auburn sports what the Rock is to UT sports or even Touchdown Jesus to Notre Dame. If Cheek's minions decided to remove the rock from campus, how would you or the students feel about that?

I like the rock, don't get me wrong, but it is not going to make or break my orange blood.

Or even worse, what if a Bammer took a sledge hammer or jack hammer to it? He'd have to live on the run forever to keep from being flogged. I could care less about Auburn but I care a great deal about the traditions of College Football. It plays a big part in making this great sport so special.

  • I love tradition also, but our rock is not Clemson's Howards rock, and those trees are not the War Eagle. Now if somebody banned Rocky Top we would have a problem.

  • In response to Alexdykes... Same here... I actually allegedly left some recycled beer upon one of those trees after watching the unloading of oranges upon our players as they came out of the tunnel. There had to have been thousands of oranges wasted by the aubie faithful that day. What about all of the toilet paper that has been wasted after each victory? I bet there has been enough paper wasted to replace several of those trees. If the truth were actually told, those trees probably needed to come down anyway before someone or something got hurt or damaged by the falling debris from the trees. The roots were already damaging the sidewalks and the roadways. There are plenty of other trees close enough to the drug store that can still be rolled without losing any of their tradition. The bama idiot deserved what he got and he went off the deep end, but surely some of their engineers can devise another meaningful plan to suffice. Ohhh... BTW, we kicked their ass that game!

Last July I had an almost 10 yr reunion with some of my former floormates from Morrill and we painted The Rock. I would be crushed not only as a Vols fan but because The Rock is for more than recruits names.

  • After all that happened I talked with a tree specialist at my church. He said there was no possible way they'd save those trees because of the chemicals he used. He said the trees would die a slow but steady death.

I think he definitely deserved jail time for what he did - destroying priceless property. But his willingness to call it in to a radio program shows he is a sandwich short of a full picnic.

Actually, I don't know which is worse - calling it in or just listening to the Paul Feinbaum show.

    Alexdykes...

I think what you're forgetting is that Toomer's corner wasn't something that could be easily replaced. You don't just grow trees like that back up. Those things were hundreds of years old. I think the fact that this traditional icon was so irreplaceable is what has many fans so upset.

While it may not seem like much to you, I think you have to find it within yourself to acknowledge what a terrible loss this was for fans. Don't get me wrong, nobody died...but in terms of losing a campus icon, this is a real tragedy for the Auburn fanbase.

That's actually a great idea. I wonder if that would be possible, to convert the tree into some format of token for fans to take home with them. At the very least, it would make the university a lot of money. Kind of like selling seats from old stadiums?

Anyways, a very good idea OrangeVol.
