OT: University Student Fees go towards this???

  • This is an extremely biased article that fails to mention all of the topics Sex Week includes (Sexuality and Religion, free HIV testing, UTK and stopping sexual assault, Middle East and Sexuality, and Sex, Gender, and the Law, among others).

    Nor does it mention what past events student fees have been used to support - and I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that students fees have also been used to pay for perfectly wholesome events as well.

    I remain more worried about the laughable parking situation on campus.

    UT still doesn't even provide free parking — or even convenient parking that we can pay to access — for the media, like us, who cover the Vols on a daily basis. I've gotten two parking tickets in the past week, and Wes was just towed two days ago. It's a joke.

  • After moving out of Tennessee I realized the joke that Fox News is. Probably the most biased news source there is. Gotta love when they don't provide everything. As ADunc said, Sex Week is much more than one thing. It is a good thing to have IMO as a lot of students are sexually active. If we can help spread STD's then I am all for it as it all begins with education.

  • I don't mean to be "that" person, but doesn't this fall under the area of the two subjects we are discouraged from discussing on this board (Politics/Religion)? This subject has ramifications in both.

    The parking at UT is so awful. I'm up to three tickets now in the last three weeks.

    Interesting to see this on this board today.
    My son is considering going to UT, Purdue, or Va Tech. Just last night my wife expressed concerns about this and also all the money being spent on the new GLB&T dorm being built.
    Obviously, I would like to see him attend my alma mater, but this is not helping with my wife's concerns about the university's priorities.

    I would respectfully disagree with your wife's opinion on the university's priorities. One of my favorite parts of attending UT (or any large university including Purdue or Va. Tech) was being exposed to and learning from a very diverse community. This includes diversity in race, religion, ethnicity as well as lifestyle choices and sexual preference. I may not have agreed with all of these but I certainly learned from them and am a better person for it.

    In 2011 I applied for grad school in Nashville and, as part of the process, requested a copy of my transcript from UT. They wouldn't give it to me until I paid a parking ticket.

    From 2008.

    UT Parking Services is like an elephant or the mafia. They don't forget.

  • I understand that some of the topics in that series are valid. I also understand that some have a problem with the possible conservative slant of the article. My problem is with the way this is being funded. I have a dog in this hunt because I'm an alumnus and my Nephew is a student at the University now. You are right about parking, it sucked when I was a student and apparently it still sucks. They are also now charging students for football tickets. I just don't feel spending captive student dollars on something like "sex week" is appropriate.

    Lesbian bondage and butt chugging, just what I want my University known for!
