OT, but this is great in two ways:

  • First, the Reds are the first MLB team to clinch a playoff spot and secondly, THE REDS SWEPT THE CUBS to clinch it!

    MLB Recap - Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs - Sep 20, 2012 - CBSSports.com

The Cincinnati Reds became the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season, beating the Chicago Cubs 5-3 Thursday while manager Dusty Baker remained in a hospital after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

  • Same here. I hope to make it up there for a playoff game. Unbelievable ballpark.

  • Alright guys, the day has come. I'm not a huge fan of the matchup, the Giants are the only team in the NL that can beat us in a series. We need to jump all over them early and often.

  • I just want to know the logic behind the higher seeds starting the first two games away. Giants will be charged up and if they win the first 2 then what good is home field? We have to win 3 in a row now because they held serve. MLB has become a nightmare with the playoffs.

It certainly benefits a Wild Card teams chances.

Few people seem to remember this, but here's the deal: It's a one-year-only arrangement designed to eliminate the additional travel day in a 2-2-1 series. It's being done that way because MLB already had set its schedule for the year, including the end date for the playoffs, when it decided to add the wild-card games and the fifth playoff team in each league.

Because adding the wild-card game on short notice tightened the playoff scheduling, leaving little margin for error, they decided the best way to make the schedule work this year was to eliminate a travel day for the division series.

It's definitely not ideal, and even I'm not a fan of it. But it's just for this year, and MLB felt that was the only way it could add the fifth playoff team in each league this year.

Good info. Why couldn't they wait till next year to add the 5th team? If your gonna do something, do it right. Just seems like a punishment for having a better record.

Good question. Apparently they were too excited to debut that format to wait another year. The good news is it will be back to 2-2-1 next year.

The more I think about it, though, the less I'm sure it's that big of a deal. Under this format, at least the lower seed will have to win the clincher on the road no matter what if it wants to win the series. Under the 2-2-1 format, the lower seed can have a chance to clinch at home just by splitting the first two games.

Like I said earlier, I'm not a fan of the matchup but I believe we took 4 of 7 from them if memory serves me right. You may be right, but saying they'd have to get lucky to win baffles me.

The way it's set up just sn't fair to the Reds. Admittedly, I'm a huge Giants fan, but I think having to face Cain and Madbum in SF to start the series makes it very possible you lose two out of the gate. That's tough to overcome with no margin for error, even when going home, having to win three. I just think Cain and Madbum's experience from 2010 is going to make it very difficult for Cincinnati. Cain is Cain, and I'm pretty sure Madbum already threw a one hitter at them this year. Again, it's just a bad set up for the Reds.

  • Very valid points. My take on it is tonights game is gonna be a pitching duel. I think if we score 4 we win. In game 2 we are throwing Arroyo, which favors San Fran. I do like the decision to throw him away from GABP. In my opinion, the series rests on the arm of Latos and game 3.
