I will say, I liked all the Nolan Batmans. Obviously the Dark Knight is a masterpiece, but I really felt like the last one was so weighed down. It was just an uber-drama with people dressed up as Batman characters to me...The one criticism, that I feel is legit, is that is an effort to make Batman more dramatic and legitimate for the screen, Nolan took away some of the fun and suspension of belief that has to be there for comic book characters.

That being said, it was still a chance for me to see freaking Batman on a big screen, so I will never complain about that

  • Find me one Chris Nolan film that isn't purely depression and turbidity about humanity. He takes something fun and lighthearted (Batman) and makes it wholly dark and heavy and certainly not kid-friendly.

He does this with everything. Inception...while a short-sighted yet not terrible premise...was entirely too long and depressing.

Nolan has fans amongst the masses because his films "feel" smart and amongst the critics because they "seem" artsy...but really, it's just a consistent pattern and theme applied to different stories.

I believe the word you're looking for is "substance." Nolan took a wholly uninspiring franchise that somehow had produced way more movies than there ever should have been about Batman, and he breathed new life into it by adding substance to the story. He made the characters more complex and realistic, rather than the caricatures that were in some if the earlier Batman movies. I couldn't have cared less about any previous Batman movies, but the last three made by Nolan - and the last two in particular - were unbelievably entertaining to me.

As for being "kid-friendly," there are plenty of kid-friendly movies these days - that's what sells at the box office - and not enough quality movies that are both entertaining and thought-provoking. Props to Nolan for making movies that satisfy both the CGI-explosion-loving crowd and hardcore movie buffs alike. It's a difficult balance, but he manages to pull it off.

Crockett, I mean this with all due respect (and light-heartedly), but I never thought you might just be a bit of a contrarian until I read your take on Nolan. Most people agree he's one of the best filmmakers alive. I didn't realize it was possible to dislike his work that much. Seriously, you're undoubtedly in the minority on this one.

  • Also, for those who haven't seen it, The Prestige might be Nolan's most underrated film. Loved that one. As much as I enjoyed Inception and The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Memento still are two of Nolan's best, IMO.

  • FWIW, I think Nolan has done such a great job with the Batman movies that, honestly, he would be my first choice to direct the new Star Wars movies that are coming out in a couple of years. He's that good, and there's only a select few who I would trust with the Star Wars franchise. He's one of them.

Following is really, really good too! In fact, I can't think of a Nolan movie I don't like; As a comic book fan I'm just ready for a little fantasy to be injected back into Batman. I completely agree that Nolan put substance into the movies, where no one has before. But I don't think you have to take out the fun to do that...comic book authors have been finding a middle ground for years now. Also, the recent video games Arkham Asyllum and Arkham City are almost perfect interpretations of the mix between substance and fantasy that I would like to see in a Batman movie. For me, the Dark Knight did a good job of keeping that mix, but the third film kinda lost it

  • We'll just agree to disagree. "Substance" is not what Nolan added to Batman, and he removed 99% of the humor the main character has always portrayed.

And the fact is, Batman has always been marketed to children. Walk through a toy section at a store sometime...and when your 8 year old wants to see "the new Batman movie" and cannot/should not...I feel there's an issue.

The Prestige is easily Nolan's best film and it is still entirely consumed with the worst of humanity.

I wont even discuss your last line since it is ridiculous.

I will however, refute your impression of Batman. I think it is quite the opposite. Batman is actually quite grim. His stories are always dark and filled with mystery. He is rough, violent, and his rogues galery has some insane characters in it. In fact, I can point out three or four stories which shouldn't be read by children at all. The fact that Batman action figues and the 60's tv show exist don't mean the character. To say that there is humor associated with the character is categorically false. To say there is an aspect of fantasy because he is, in fact, a comic book character is much more true. But Batman has never been humorous.

  • Let me clarify, Bruce Wayne always had humor connected to him. And Nolan removed that aspect.

And what part of my last sentence was ridiculous?

It's amazing how poorly this board takes non-conformist opinions.

+1 So true. I have been a Batman fan since childhood and the '60s TV series nearly permanently ruined everything Bat-related. He's called "the Dark Knight" for a reason."

Am I the only one who finds it unbelievably ironic that a self-admitted pessimist when it comes to UT sports apparently doesn't like movies that are dark and not happy or kid-friendly? biggrin

  • While I realize you're being a bit sarcastic...my point is that Nolan is a one-trick pony. Huge budget (Dark Knight) or small budget (Memento) and it's all the same.

    Great filmmakers aren't like that.

I don't think Inception, The Dark Knight, Memento, The Prestige and every other movie Nolan has done all should be lumped into the same category. They're not all equally grim, dark movies. They're all well-made dramas or thrillers, which means they're a bit more serious by nature, but I wouldn't call him a "one-trick pony" based on that. I would say The Dark Knight is maybe his darkest movie.

    I totally agree 100%.

Batman TOYS have always been marketed to kids but the Batman comics are all together a different breed. They are almost entirely very dark, violent, and suspensful. In fact, i would rather my 8-year-old see a Batman movie than read one of the comics.
