OT: iOS 6

  • So....besides the map junk, what else is good for iOS 6? I will hang up and listen. Thanks.

  • Our resident apple junkie (Tntoak) will have to answer that question...

  • Not so much the OS 6 the iPhone 5 features as the actual processor in the phone. downloading OS 6 for the 4/4s would almost be a waste simply bc the processing chip in those phones isnt as fast. itd be like putting windows vista on a PC from the 90s. your hardware isnt up to speed to process the software.
I havent got into many of the features as my work has focused on the actual iPhone itself and not much about the software behind it. I guess ill expand on what i do know, Siri has been improved...and idk anything about old Siri but new Siri is programmed to act like a conversation opposed to having to ask specific questions each time.
Also, panaramic(sp) photos are now a feature, the ability to forward messages when declining a call, you can set up VIP list on your phone to allow for incoming calls....say your in a meeting you can set your phone to automatically decline all calls except for those that may come from a child/wife that could be an emergency. Turn by Turn navigation, up to the minute traffic reports.

idk if thats what you were wanting to know, but thats the stuff i picked up on but like i said i didnt review the software as much bc its not really my dept at work.

  • If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, the new panorama feature of the camera app is a major plus. I tested it on my 4S and was impressed with the results. A lot of the tweaks to the OS are under the hood, but I'll throw a small list out of some of the major new features:

    - Separate Podcasts app - no more looking for audio podcasts in Music and video in Videos.
    - Do Not Disturb mode
    - improved Facebook/Twitter integration (for those who use those services)
    - Smarter Siri - can open apps, give you sports scores, even book a table at a restaurant now.
    - Better performance. Even on a 4 or 4S there is a noticeable performance boost. There has been some streamlining of the base code which frees up resources for apps.

I am looking at the Samsung products today. I am thinking of switching my phone and IPad.

Samsungs are ok if you don't mind ridiculously short battery time. I've gone from HTC to Samsung and now to iPhone 4S. Will not likely go back to droid.

I'm disappointed in the Ios6. My wife has the iPhone and I have an iPad. Some upgrades, but nothing that seperates them. I will be sticking with HTC/Android software phone.

  • Apple's biggest change is coming in October - iTunes gets a complete redesign/rewrite. I've seen a preview version and it's a whole new app.

The software has some real issues in locating certain buildings in crowded areas. For example, the original version of the software had the Washington monument located several hundred yards from where it actually is. Also, the search function is awful and is a real step back from what Google offered. Bus and train commuters are upset because the Google version allowed you to access schedules directly from the app. This version requires that you leave the app and go to a third party version. These problems are more evident in the northeast, where most of the media is so they are crushing Apple over the mapping app. Apple gets its raw mapping data from Tom Tom, who can't distance themselves from this fast enough.

I gotcha. I live in rural TN I guess its just not that much of an issue for me.

Everyone comparing the maps themselves to Google Maps are missing the aim of the new product. Where the new Maps app shines (and outpaces Google Maps by far) is in the turn-by-turn directions. I used them in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend and they worked like a charm - far better than any experiences I've had using Google's turn-by-turn directions. You're also comparing a version 1.0 (Apple) to a version 5 or 6 (Google), and it takes time to build the database. Chances are that version 2.0 will be a massive update, and will be based a lot on the user input regarding the current version.

And if you REALLY want to still use Google Maps on your iphone, you can get it on the device in less than 10 seconds.

One more note regarding Transit directions. The reason Apple's maps currently lacks that feature is because Google owns the backend they're using for transit apps, and they aren't sharing it with anyone.

Problem is that Samsung (as well as many other android manufacturers) are getting caught up in the same CPU speed/core race that HP/Dell/etc got into a few years back. There's a reason Apple's big advances on the processor have centered on the GPU side rather than simply throwing more CPU cores on the die. There are currently no apps on either the iOS or Android side that will take advantage of more than two cores, so having a 4-core processor is overkill in every sense of the word at this time. If you look at the international and US versions of the Galaxy S3, one has a 4-core CPU with 1GB RAM, the other has a dual-core CPU with 2GB RAM. So even Samsung isn't going all-in on the "more cores is better" argument.

Apple doesn't reveal the specs of its processors, but some third-parties have verified that the iPhone 5 has a tri-core GPU in the A6. That's where the focus should be, because the better the GPU, the higher resolutions you can push, and the faster and more responsive the graphical elements and UI become.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the S3. I literally have a cabinet with every major Android/Windows Phone/iOS/Blackberry device about 20 feet away from my desk at work, and I've had the change to use all of the phones over the years. To me, the S3 feels more like a mini Kindle Fire than a phone as far as size is concerned. That being said, several of my co-workers prefer the S3 to anything made by Apple. The only Android-based device I like is my Nexus 7 tablet. It shipped with Jellybean, and it's the first Android-based device I've used that didn't have a lot of issues with either the touchscreen (requiring multiple taps to register) or UI lag.
