OT~MLB Question...career wise

  • Who do you take Chipper or Jeter?

  • Tough call, and not a bad comparison. They're both surefire Hall of Famers, and they both have been really good at what they do for a long time. But they're totally different players at two different positions, so they also are tough to compare side by side.

That said, if I had to choose one, I'd probably take Jeter. Can't go wrong with either one, but Jeter has been a really good table setter and good shortstop for a long time, and you can't argue with his postseason success. He's been the leader of some really good teams, and there aren't many shortstops out there who have been as good as he was in his prime.

  • Your right, you can not go wrong either way. Jeter has remained realitively healthy and always been surrounded by what ever George wanted to buy. Chipper has had a few short years and been on a few bad teams too but has still put up crazy numbers through his career. I have definitely seen more of Chipper living close to Atlanta and being a Braves fan I am a little bias but I think it is definitely a close comparison for an entire career.

  • I take Chipper.

And if you restarted their careers 10 times from their draft date, I think Chipper beats Jeter 9/10 times. Jones has gotten SO unlucky with injuries, especially the last decade.

Chipper's injuries definitely were a factor in my decision, too. It's tough to overlook that. Jeter has had some injuries, too, but not quite as many as Chipper.

Chipper was definitely unlucky, injury-wise. He first blew out his knee his rookie year. Had he been healthy all the way, he would have hit 500+ homers, gotten 3,000 hits and would have been the No. 1 switch hitter of all time.

Another year and he gets to that or real close to it anyway. I wish he had not announced and waited another year.

  • I don't think you can really answer that question fully. Sure, Jeter won more titles, has more individual awards than Chipper. But I think the two's numbers are a little skewed for a few reasons. I think Chipper's individual numbers would be even better if he had played in NY because of the short porch in right field. He also had some stints on the DL, which hurt his numbers. Jeter never went on the DL, that I know of, which increased his value. But I also think that because he never really got hurt, we don't really know the true value of Jeter to his team, but we know the value of Chipper, because we've seen the effect his absence has on the lineup, and in the field. Both were very, very clutch. Both surefire Hall of Famers. I would choose Chipper, but you cant argue with Jeter's success, as much as it pains me to say that. You can also say that Mariano Rivera had as much to do with Jeter winning all those championships. I still think the Braves would have won another title or two if they had had a legit closer.

  • Tough to compare the two as they are very different players, but they both were at their peaks around the same time. I'm a big Braves fan so I am going to be biased, but I take Chipper. Whose team would have won more games with out either of the respective players, and its the Yankees. after Chipper's first 5-6 years, once Mr. Turner sold the team, Atlanta became a mid-market ball club. The Yankees would have found another SS, and still won. In season's Chipper has been hurt, they have been really bad. He has anchored the middle of the lineup for 2 decades and the last one he has done it with no cartilage in either knee, yet he still hits over 300. I don't want this to sound like I am discounting Jeter at all, I hate the Yankees, but I love him as a player. He is going to retire with no less than 3500 hits (hell he has over 160 already this year at the age of 38), 250 homeruns and a BA that should remain well over 300, the stats don't lie. I just feel that Chipper has meant so much more to his team and has had to carry them for so long.

Good arguement though and will expect that they are both sure fire hall of famers.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Yes, Jeter's numbers speak for themselves. That being said, the Yankees would have just went out and bought the best SS on the market and kept on winning if Jeter had left or something. I'm just saying Jeter might have been atleast more replaceable than Chipper would have been.

Jeter a better leader, no way. That is not a knock on Jeter. I have watched Chipper over the years and he is second to none.
Yankees have a much larger payroll, so Jeters supporting cast has been better.
    Championships, see above.
Don't agree with SS being harder to fill. There are plenty of very good shortstops in both leagues.
Injuries are a bad comparison. That is more lady luck than anything.

Chippers numbers as a switch hitter are fantastic.

I would say that both of them are sure fire hall of famers and I would not directly compare them. That is from someone who has NEVER been a Yankees fan!

Not a better leader, championships bought and paid for by Steinbrenner, SS may be marginally harder but Chipper also played left field to help the team so TP could come in and play third. More durable-Jeter, better playoff #'s with a bullet(better supporting players for more of his career than Chipper). Very close call but I give it to Chipper.

  • First and foremost, SS is the toughest position on the field to play. No question about it. SS's are more valuable. Also, people keep referencing the Yankees "buying" teams. Yes, they've spent a ton of money, but the Yankees won because of the guys they developed and drafted. Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettite, and Bernie catapulted them to their championships.

Jeter is the better player, but not by much. I have nothing but respect for Chipper. He has always played the game the right way. Two things set him apart: the fact he is the Captian of the Yankees and his postseason success. The Yankees have the most storied history of any sports team and being their Captian is a huge deal. Jeter's teams made the playoffs 15 years compared to Chipper's teams making it 11 years. So it's not like Chipper don't have opportunities. Jeter is a .307 career hitter in the playoffs and has hit .321 in his world series appearances. Pretty dang good.

  • Chipper. Jeter is not near the leader in the clubhouse that the media suggests he is. I have had the opportunity to meet Derek Jeter. I can assure you that Jeter is not deserving to carry Chipper's jockstrap to the laundry room....

I wish, but just can't see it. He needs 23 more homers and nearly 300 hits. And it's pretty clear that even though he can still get it done, he's running on fumes. Could not play last night, for example, after that 13 inning disaster on Monday.
