Offensive Line

  • They suck!! We couldn't run against a Pee Wee team. You guys can be positive all you want our offensive line sucks bad. Stone can not hike the football and we can't run the football. Its pathetic I'm so sick of the same old stuff. Tyler Bray played amazing but our line should be ashamed. Say what you will about Fulmer he produced great offensive lines.

  • I've took time to collect my thoughts about this game. I'm still positive about the season and the direction of this program. But, I'm calling out Coach Harry Heinstand. The offensive line's performance for the last 2 seasons is not at an SEC level. No more excuses the line is young. As the abve poster said, Fulmer usually produced good offensive lines. Heck, under Kiffy, James Craig had 2 walk ons and we ran the ball just fine. The talent is there, I'm not confident in the coaching at this position.

    I totally agree Thank You!!!!

  • We've got talent on the offensive line and RB. No excuses on the pathetic performance of the run game.

  • I agree in that I do not see good fundamentals on running plays. On the run, the OL must go low and attack. They seem to approach run blocking like pass protection, standing up and waiting to be engaged. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what I'm seeing.

See the same thing and that's why the running game keeps getting blown up.

Yes that is what pisses me off. We pas block great but we can not get any push on the run. This is SEC football if you can not run you have no time of possession. Which results in your defense over working themselves. That is what I'm getting at thank you guys for making me not feel crazy!

  • You aren't crazy at all! I have been a bit hesitant to voice it myself, considering Harry's sterling rep of getting guys into the NFL. But something is wrong, and it's not getting fixed.

  • It kills me that it is always one guy missing his assignment to kill the play. We had a guard pull on a pass play where the defensive lineman literally ran through the gap he left. That is just inexcusable unawareness.

i to question what is happening BUT i remember when we had two twins ( walk-ons ) and another walk-on starting on our Off line and we couldnt recruit anyone ; i have questions and it sounds like our head coach has questions but we have to give them some time . Coach Dooley understands the importance of the running game so i really hope that we will start to see some improvements soon praypray

  • i am no longer convinced about Hiestands ability. I have gone with his rep to this point but it is time to fish or cut bait.

  • I've wondered for the last 1.5+ years why everyone was so quick to anoint this O line as remarkably can't miss. As a whole, they weren't super high recruits. I suppose it was because they were more promising than what we currently had and they were all young. Now they are maturing and aren't living up to the probably unrealistic expectations of most of our fans. I agree that they should be capable of blowing up of first two opponent's D lines and running at will, but that didn't happen. I blame the o-line coach for that in a lot of ways. Any line that can adequately pass block should be able to man handle Montana and Cincy, but it appears to me they might not be as physically gifted as many of our fans erroneously thought they would be. Coaching is certainly a part of the problem along with unrealistic expectations IMO.

Stone 4star, James 4star, Bullard 4star, Richardson 4star...maybe you miss on one or two but not the entire front. This is looking more like coaching. Hate to say it. I say switch it up and put Bullard at center and Stone in a more natural position. His errant snaps threw the timing off on multiple plays. How much better would Bray have been with good snaps. How many sacks, hurries or knock downs of Bray would have been avoided with good shotgun snaps.

  • Center is a position of concern. Stone's low snaps were more consistent than his good snaps.

i agree , no question but they never made a switch to anyone else which really surprised me to some point ; i thought Bullard was supposed to be a pretty good center

  • Regardless of stars, even if they had a high school o line coach they should be able to get a consistent push against Montana and Cincy - that didn't remotely happen. They aren't out physicalling people that they should. If they are as talented as most think, they should be able to handle those teams with a modicum of technique, which they aren't. Coaching can only take you so far - talent and/or desire is lacking in that group IMO

    VolBaller33

  • I think it is important to note that the OL does a pretty good with pass protection. They even missed a few assignments there, but the tackles did a really good job against a pretty good pass rush. The run blocking is horrible... no consistency as a group. To make matters worse, the RBs are just tip-toeing up to the line of scrimmage... too much dancing in the backfield.

That was shocking. It was not 1, 2. or 3. It was consistently snapped low. But, no adjustment. Stone is not a natural Center is he? And if he isn't, are we that bad at Center?

  • After thinking about it I may agree with RockytopATL who posted earlier that they seem to use the same technique for run blocking that they use for pass blocking. They wait for contact from the defense and don't initiate in order to get a push. it does not make sense.

Back in the the dark ages when I played, I had the opposite problem. I had to fight the urge to go attack in pass protection like I did on runs instead of standing up, backing up and forming the pocket and waiting to be hit. But initiating contact always made more sense to me. After all, I knew the snap count; the defender didn't.

Shoeless, this is one of those days I'd have a hard time going on without alcohol. Once upon a time, I'd declare a season over after our first loss (usually to Florida). I'm not that bad anymore.

But this feels like '85 when our QB, Tony Robinson went down, I think against Alabama, though I may be wrong on which game. I thought it was the end.

But a little known sub named Daryl Dickey (Doug's son) came off the bench and made history. I wish something like that would happen with one of these WRs.
