Optimism: 2010 or 2013? Dooley or Jones?

  • Are you more optimistic when Kiffin left and Dooley was hired or when Dooley was fired and Butch was hired? In spite of the fact Big Orange Country coveted the grand slam or at least the homerun hire, I believe Vol football is better off now in where the program currently is and where Coach Jones can take it than it was three years ago. I do not like the fact that CDD beat CBJ in 2011 but in reality that game should have been and was supposed to be won by UT. I refuse to call that game a signature win because CDD was supposed to win it. The signature win would have been one we were not expected to win (ie UF, LSU, UA, UGA, USCe, NOT UK VU, UNC etc). What do Vol fans think?

  • I'm far more excited/confident in Jones. The simplest way I can think to explain it is this:

When Jones name came into focus for the UT job, a lot of fans including myself started sniffing around the internet to find out what kind of coach he is. We were rewarded with press conferences, locker room videos, staff videos, award notices, championship game previews and a wealth of other relevant info regarding CBJ's career.

I remember doing the same for Dooley and the only thing that really jumped out was the LaTech upset of Saban's Bama in 2009. There were some smatterings of news about Dooley pulling double-duty as HC/AD, but almost nothing about what sort of coach he was, and certainly no locker room speeches.

  • Looking solely at the fact that UT beat Cincy in 2011 is like talking about how great of a ship the Titanic was and ignoring the fact that it sunk.

I'm way more optimistic and excited now than I was with the Dooley hire.

  • I'm much more optimistic than when we hired Dooley but I would have rather had a defensive minded coach that might have preserved the momentum Chaney has given us on offense.

  • Gauging my excitement on a scale of 1-10.

    Kiffin: 9
    Dooley (pre-Wikipedia'd): 2
    Dooley (post-Wikipedia'd): 1
Jones: 6.5 mostly because I REALLY wanted Strong.

  • This isn't even close. Jones by a mile. Dooley felt rushed and had a losing record in the WAC. Jones has won or shared 4 out of 6 conference championships and is 50-27. I understand the concerns about recruiting and all that but ultimately it comes down to practice and gameday coaching. Jones has proven himself there.

  • 2013 if it including looking at the roster compared to 2010! CBJ resume is more impressive! I really think hes going to surprise with his recruiting once he get going!

  • More excited about Jones (then Dooley). Jones is a winner. Winning is a habit. I think he will win at UT (if given time).

  • Hamilton short sold us with Dooley. Unfortunately he didn't have a plan and rushed with the first interested candidate.

I felt Hart short sold us as well until I looked into Jones. Hart is smarter than I gave him credit for although I knew he'd done a helluva job in Tuscaloosa and was well thought of there. Turns out I think he made a good hire. Time will tell but I'm happy, much happier than with Dooley.

  • I'm pretty neutral on it. I was mostly puzzled by Derek Dooley's hire as I didn't think he had the resume for a job like Tennessee. It's clear in hindsight that he was a panic hire for Mike Hamilton. I think Jones has the resume and I am cautiously optimistic but only time will tell. Will he turn out to be Dave Hart's panic hire? I certainly hope not and I will support Jones. Still, the hiring felt rushed to me.

  • I am and was in a wait and see mode with both hires. CBJ success will depend on two things, how well he and his staff can recruit, and how well and how quickly the current team buys into what he's selling. I hope CBJ is the real deal for the programs sake.
