Brian Randolph’s season-ending ACL tear has put Josh Conklin’s position group in the spotlight, and Tennessee's first-year safeties coach thinks his guys are up to the task.

  • That was a good article Wes. I agree with him they didn't execute. If they don't execute put someone else in there that will. You gave them a job to do and if they don't do it someone else is there to step in.

  • Good read. I like seeing Conklin getting some press. He is extremely talented, both as a recruiter and coach.

  • We need some wins guy's plain and simple, really wan't this staff to stay together a few years some really really good coaches and recruiters.

'Brent, RIGHT NOW, is our next best safety, IN OUR OPINION. In negotiations you always look for what I call 'Weasel Words'. These are words that indicate a lack of conviction or show a point of weakness in what someone is saying. Conklin used two sets of weasel words in one phrase. Bottom line...he is not completely comfortable with Brewer. Conklin is right about one thing he danced around so as not to offend his guys. If they don't execute within the defense and technique they have been taught they don't have the talent or speed to recover. Great article but it did not give me the warm fuzzy's. +1 Wes.

  • It's called a learning curve. We will get there, I hope in a couple of weeks. New system with young talent. We are headed forward, not backward. Dooley & company will make sure of that. Next year, Randalph, Moore and Brewer with tons of experience at safety. McNeal and Miles in the wings. Optimistic!

I agree wholeheartedly, as far as no warm fuzzies for how our safties will likely play, but I I do have a good deal of "fuzziness" for Conklin, who sure seems like a smart fellow. He's trying to be tactful and avoid lying at the same time.

The blunt truth probably is closer to, "Well, if we thought anyone who wasn't playing was a great player, he would have already been playin', ya know? We were already slow on the back end, and now we're afraid we'll be even slower, plus not even know how to line up. So all we can do now is do our best to get 'em ready and pray that, given a chance, Brewer and our other guys can surprise us all." Conklin obviously doesn't want to discourage his players and hopes they can get it done, but he doesn't want to write checks with his mouth that he'll be held accountable to the media for if we stink. Smart, IMO.

One huge positive, though, guys: If Brewer gets the chance to lay a clean shot on somebody, he's big, he's strong, and he can bring the pain. I may be completely wrong, but I think he'll be involved in the pressure game at UGA.

  • I think any team that watched our game film saw our weaknesses and Florida was able to exploit those weaknesses. Florida knew they could take advantage of Teague. I can't imagine that Coleman is any better.

  • Now is the time for the defense to step up and show what they are made of.

  • To me communication is part of the execution. It seems like the first few days after the game everyone was saying "we didn't communicate...", now they're saying we didn't execute. Maybe the didn't execute because they weren't communicating. That 80 yard run was an obvious breakdown in communication, players were looking around at what to do.

Accurate and humorous at the same time. I like that. +1

You may be right but what I saw on that play was a defensive end hand fighting the blocker instead of shedding him so he could make a play and a corner who took a wrong angle. Both of those are execution and technique in my mind.

  • Former Men's BB Associate coach Tony Jones is saying (on Twitter) Teague is a scapegoat in this situation.

Anyone else think that's not close to the truth?

I don't think it is close to the truth. This is not Teague's first bit at the 'burned apple'.

They probably thought it was communication errors, until they watched the film.
