Palermo waiting for 'bam' moment

Tennessee's John Palermo has been coaching college football since 1977, and the grizzled veteran said so many things will get better for the Vols when they win a close game.

  • I wonder what the players think of the coaching situation? Surely some in their own minds have thought or wondered about it. Can't be a good way to prepare for a game, with that stuck in the back of your mind.I sure hope they havent got the tucked in the back of thier minds. I'd love a Win Saturday, I just hope things click better for 60 minutes. Win or Lose

  • Kinda waiting for the 'bam' moment myself. Until then, I'll just Keep Calm and Sing Rocky Top...

  • Good article Wes! I think if we can get over this hump and beat a ranked SEC team I think we can get on a roll, now let's get over that hump with a win over the gamecocks!

  • The mind is a dangerous place to be for an athlete. Dwelling too much on one thing (i.e. coaching situation), can cause an athlete to not focus, thus resulting in less than acceptable performance and then possibly losing their starting job.

I'm sure the players are aware of the "drama" surrounding the program, but I would venture to guess they're focused on trying to win a football game because they're pissed about losing 4 games in a row.

  • If there is any coach who can get it done it is him. The D-line is the absolute strength of our defense, we have the talent up front and he is an excellent coach. I'll tell you those Badger fans were beaten down by those losses b/c when Alvarez took the job Wisconsin had the longest losing streak in the country. So they were frustrated, but they finally broke thru. A break thru is sure to come at some point, just don't know when and where. I believe we just need to lean on the ground game and just pound our remaining foes. We don't really have any proof yet that Bray can take over late and be clutch, but we have seen this all season from the ground game. We have consistently pounded the ball on our foes.

  • Should a Head Coaching change be made...any thoughts on possible assistants kept? I think Palermo has done well. Graham is definitely a keeper for coaching, recruiting, and ties to UT! Hinshaw and Ansley both are important recruiters. Anyway...Go Vols beat those cocks!

  • We let South Carolina get out of the cellar. We might never push them back down there.

Kentucky and Vandy still looking for the door.

Let's hope so. Diversions rarely help a team. But sometimes, things like this motivate a team and push it over the hump. Maybe that will happen Saturday.

When Kiffin left, Chaney stayed. I can't remember if others pre-dated Dooley or not (Lance Thompson? Hinshaw? others?) The difference was that Kiffin quit rather than being fired. When Fulmer was ousted, I think his entire staff either quit or got canned, too -- but Fulmer had been here for 16 years, and I don't know if his staff had contracts that expired with his. I think Sunseri and probably Graham, Palermo & any other coach hired at the beginning of this year have contracts that go beyond just a single year.

But I agree: at least Graham and Pittman are keepers. The ground game has been way better this year than last year. We've got RB's running effectively up the gut (even Devrin Young at a 150-170lbs) -- even against Bama. And Pittman did it without sacrificing the great pass-blocking the OL had done the previous 1-2 years. Really impressive.

  • Still wondering how our best DL Big Mac didn't get a snap against Akron and it took 4 weeks for them to play him like they should. Like Kurt Roper forgot about Montario Hardesty against Bama I guess.
