Patterson embracing 'opportunity'

One talented receiver's squandered opportunity enhanced another talented receiver's already-great opportunity, and Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson claims to know that.

  • Wes, You have seen Patterson run routes. You can tell when guys are special just from running routes, you just can. Justin Hunter glides, he is silky smooth and runs beautiful routes, it just looks easy to him. Now Da'Rick who is very physical, wasn't a smooth player. I'm gonna make some comparisons...

    Justin Hunter=AJ Green
    Da'Rick=Julio Jones

Julio wasn't smooth like AJ Green is, and I think that is kind of the same with Da'Rick and Justin... Now to get to the point who is Cordarelle more like.

Can he run the comeback route and the square in or is he at this point just a hitch, post, go route guy.

  • I think he will show up friday and act like he owns the place and not let nerves get the best of him. I believe he will be fine.

I think Da'Rick is smoother than Julio as a pure route runner. JMO.

I'm holding off on judging Patterson in that way until I see him play more when he develops a better feel for the speed of everything. Don't get me wrong, it's obvious that he's a thoroughbred, but I think he'll look smoother once he understands everything happening around him. You could tell a huge difference with Hunter and Da'Rick in that area their second year.

Thanks Wes, I am just trying to get an idea of the type of WR I am going to see Friday. Sounds like he is still raw. I think he may catch a bomb though Friday.

  • Very nice article; I'm hoping CP is like a heavy weight fighter when he hears the bell, his nerves are gone and he comes out fighting.

  • He'll be better than Rogers. Might take a few games to really hit his stride, but if he stays healthy, he'll get there. As for Friday night, I expect him to win a few battles, probably lose a few too. (But only because the secondary is so elite.) But the nervousness? No way that's going to be a problem. Once he gets his first live hit in the game, most of it will be gone. When he makes his first catch, 90% will be gone. Being out there with Justin all loose and encouraging him will make a huge difference. After 3 or 4 catches (which I believe he will make sometime in the first half), nervousness will be a distant memory. I know this is a bold statement, but hey, it's that time of year: We're not going to miss Rogers.

Team chemistry wise... I don't think you miss Rogers, but if Hunter or Patterson go down mid season.... UT might be in trouble.

HUSH lol, but ya we need to be luckier than last season on the injury front, we are mighty thin in some spots where their backup have went down with injuries...linebackers, TE's. I think we are better suited to withstand a WR injury, but losing either would be a huge deal to overcome.

  • Awesome article Wes. On a seperate subject, is anyone else getting Adds that are playing on every article you click on? It is making my life harder than it needs to be. These adds are trying to play while my speach software is trying to read the screne at the same time...not fun.

  • After I watched all of his highlights I can't wait to see him get the ball in the open field that's where he will really shine I expect to see some quick hits to him Friday and let him do his thing with the ball in his hands.

  • CP will be deadly on fade routes in the end zone..Hopefully Chaney has the smarts to put a body underneath the route to clear things out or suck a safety back towards the post.

  • Bray needs to open up with either "go deep" and let CP or Hunter "loosin up" the 2ndary or throw a few short simple passes to let CP get under control and get rid of the "nerves". Oh yeah and get ONeal some "touches" and get the o line working.
We've got some "firepower" BUT first game "jitters" need to be controlled by Chaney and Sal by working these guys into the game.. BUT don't be surprised if NCSU tries to speed up the game and not allow our new defense to rotate and keep us on the field..

  • Even if patterson is able to take Roger's place with little or no fall off, we have no one close to taking Patterson 3rd receiver spot, meaning the loss of Rogers is a very large loss.
