Patterson expectations worry Dooley

SANDESTIN, Fla. — When you watch his film, you have to offer him a scholarship. When you look at the history of "can't-miss" JUCO receiver prospects who missed, you worry.

  • Physically he has it........how fast can he get up to speed with the playbook and the speed at this level not only for games but for practice is the question? NCST game seems unrealistic.....4-5+ games in maybe. I would take the over but if he adjusts and works hard and is passionate about being great on and off the field....he could be very special the 2nd half of the year and a few spots prior (as I think we will use him like we used Da Rick and Hunter their FR year)

  • Really good stuff in this article. In talking with some other UT fans, you would think Randy Moss in his prime was coming to play at UT. Not saying he can't contribute, I definitely think he will to an extent, but I feel like the opinion that he will be 1 and done may be overstated. Just look at the jump Da'rick made from year 1 to year 2. I tell you what, though, looking at his pictures, film, and his numbers at that track event...it's difficult not to be excited.

  • Wouldnt think he has alot of pressure. Rogers and hunter have pressure but i wouldnt think with them three that any one reciever will have great whole lot of pressure. Bray just has to check down and get the ball to witch ever one is open.

Thanks Wes, great info. Dooley is so right about the mental makeup part. It makes mediocre players good and good players great. I am hoping that with the Hunter Rodgers duo some of the pressure will let up if they come out flaming the other team. It may give him the breather he needs to get 'SEC Ready'. +1

  • Not trying to add to the expectations but, do we know where we expect him to play? Will he primarily back up Rodgers or Hunter on the outside or will we possibly see him in the slot with all three of them at the same time?

think they want to play CP and Hunter on the outside in 3 wide sets and put Da'Rick in the slot......

  • It's unrealistic to believe all three receivers can have 150 yard games every week. With other quality receivers and TEs he doesn't have to put up big numbers, just make a few plays a game.

I'm sure the coaches have a plan and it will be interesting to see where he ends up playing. Nice problem to have.

  • All great points, but lets remember he plays wide receiver which is one of the easiest positions on the field. So if he comes in in shape and learns the playbook there is no reason he can't contribute right away.

I don't totally disagree with you but memorizing the play book is just part of what he will need to do. He will have to make reads then run the correct route correctly and block. I think he can and will do those things but making an incorrect read resulting in being in the wrong spot or missing a block are critical and can lead to a lot of bad things.

In my (humble) opinion, the relative ease of playing and/or learning the WR position is not judged on the position alone. Said differently, the level of competition is more important in determining the overall necessary skill essential for the position. We need but take a quick glance at the 2012 NFL Draft results to see Dooley's reason for pause (despite CP's obvious skill set)--4 of the 5 defensive backs selected in the first round called the SEC home last season. That said I also believe he does not have to be superman to be productive. Echoing several of the post above, the proven talents-level of Hunter and Rogers, coupled with Bray's pin-point cannon makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning.

I just hope he is able to meet the academic qualifications.

  • Thinking about Hunter, Rodgers, and Patterson at WR, with Bray under center, and "Tiny' watching his blind side, its not hard to get excited about this years offense. Its nice to finally have some SEC talent with experience. This offense has the potential to be prolific, and it is a welcome change after last years struggles.

  • All i know is i cant wait. Read a preseason preview this week and it had the nc state secondary rated no 1 in the country. Shoild be a nice measureimg stick for both teams.

  • I ain't worried about Mr. Patterson. I believe that he will be ready to contribute right away in some way and will get better and better as the year goes on. The man is a beast!

  • Not to knock on NC St. I know they have a stud in their secondary but what elite quarterback did they face last year in the ACC. Tyler may be their first actual nfl quarterback. But you're right should be interesting to see.
