Pick Your Favorite Way to Start the NC State Game

  • Let's do a quick, optimistic poll. These are some options for an absolutely awesome way to start the NC State game and the season. What gets you most excited:

    A) Devrin Young receives the opening kickoff on his own goal line, sets up a couple blocks, then makes a decisive cut, makes a guy miss, and BAM - he's off the races. Only the kicker to beat....oh what an ankle breaking move...TOUCHDOWN!

    B) 1st & 10 at the 25. Hand off to Rajion Neal to the left side...Tiny makes an overpowering kick-out block...Neal cuts in behind him, makes the LB miss and is through the hole...Da'Rick with a great block on the cornerback on that side...only the safety to beat, and whoa what a stiff arm! Neal shows off the 4.36 speed to the end zone, and the o-line starts salivating over their smash-mouth prospects the rest of the game.

    C) Play action pass on the first snap. Bray is only thinking one thing - Justin Hunter deep. It's just Hunter and Amerson sprinting down the sideline. Amerson has good coverage, but Bray trusts Hunter to make a play and puts a little extra air under it. Both players go up for the ball, but only 1 of them is 6'4" and an olympic-caliber long jumper. Hunter comes down with the ball, shoves Amerson to the ground, and walks (ok, maybe struts) into the end zone. HE'S BACK.

    D) NC State takes the opening possession (a touchback after Bulluck booms it into the seats). A handoff up the middle on 1st down. Big Dan tosses the Center on his butt and makes the RB say UGHHHHHHH. The crowd groans (oh the humanity!). The ball flies loose, and Herm Lathers scoops it up and races for the end zone. UT narrowly avoids an excessive celebration penalty as the whole team celebrates with Herm.

    E) Glennon drops back to pass. Sentimore blows past the tackle and flushes Glennon out of the pocket. All of a sudden, Jacques is in his face too. Glennon wings it towards the sideline on a deep out. The coverage is there...it's Teague with the INT! He's racing up the sideline, the entire defensive line pancake Glennon repeatedly, and Teague returns it for a Pick 6.

  • I figured option C would be a favorite. It would be a huge boost to have Hunter show out early in the NC State game.

I think option B might be the most important sign if it happened. If we can run the ball, against NC State and anyone else, I don't know how our offense isn't a juggernaut. I have faith in Bray, Hunter and the passing game. Seeing some early evidence of a much improved running game would give me a ton of confidence in the season.

I just want a reason to jump up and down and get excited about football on the 31st!

  • It's B for me. I know what Bray and Hunter can do. I want to see something that gets me excited and a play like B would make me feel like we're about to make a run at the national championship

  • I Iike all your options, but what I'd really like to see is a handoff to Neal for 4 yards, another handoff to Neal for 4 yards, then Lane off-tackle for 3 and the first down. Then repeat this until we score after about an 8 minute drive. NC State goes 3 and out, then we do it all over again. Best way to stop Glennon? Keep him on the sideline watching.

Run and stop the run-not sexy, but very effective.

  • I would have to go with "B"--"D" would be a close second on my list. I think it be a tremendous boost for our game strategy to be able to demonstrate that we can win by running the ball.

  • They get ball first. Pick 6 by our secondary. We essentially start the game up a touchdown and receive the ball first to start the second half.

  • I will take all of the above, especially, 1stgames plan! Running the football effectively and keeping Glennon off the field would be a perfect way to start the season.

But after hearing all of the Amerson talk, would love to see a Da'Rick/Amerson match up. Say from our 20 yard line after a touchback kickoff. Bray hits Da'Rick with the slant and Amerson jumps on Da'Rick's back in a helpless attempt to tackle. Then Da'Rick carries Amerson 80 yards to the end zone on his back similar to the way the Honeybadger was dragged last year (that play pumps me up every time I see it).

  • For me, I agree with 1stgame above. The best and most demoralizing way to begin would be about a 6-8 minute drive of solid running plays that end in a TD. This would set up Bray and others on next series and render NC State D perplexed as what to address. I also think a dominate running attack will confound the Gators scouting as well.

However, if we are not successful with a dominate ground game, Muschamp can focus on the passing attack only when he comes to Neyland.

As an aside, the 94 UT/UGA game at Athens was one of the most dominate running attacks I have seen first hand in my 42 years. Todd Helton started at QB and he could not complete a fwd pass but we must have averaged 8-9 yds a carry that day and we completely stripped the doggies of any dignity. I am not suggesting that we eliminate the pass next friday but a similar running attack would go a long way for the game and the season!

  • I don't think anyone doubts, this is Justin Hunter's team. I would vote Bray, but we all know Bray has not provided the leadership or unifying presence towards this goal that Hunter has. Ever since signing day, Hunter has been a 100% VFL.

I would like nothing more than for him to get a TD, much deserved, in this game. Not just to signify he is back, but to give a specal moment (in a bowl-game environment) to a young man who deserves it.

  • I'm probably in the minority, but I want to win in a really poorly played ugly game. Like a 7-3 or a 10-7 type ball game where we win with a game winning FG. I want lots of turnovers on both sides and poor play in all 3 aspects. I don't want this team to show much to UF or get any sense of accomplishment, I want them to be hungry.

As a follow on that would lead us to take some aggression out on Georgia State and then be fully prepared for handing Florida a good old fashion beatdown

If we have lots of turnovers against NC State I fear what it will be like against UF. State will have a stronger secondary but UF will have a stronger all around D than State will.

  • Nc state receives the ball and goes 3 and out with glennon getting put on his butt each time he drops back to pass.

  • +1 excellent post

    A) UT wins toss, defers to second, NCST receives. Great kickoff by Palardy, 2yrds deep into the end zone but NCST returns it. Bad idea. Dontavious Sapp makes a booming hit on the returner at the three yard line. Bring out the defense...

    B) continued from previous. CSS looks to prove he is as nuts as we think. Cover 1 D. Supersized D-Line anchored by Mt. Dan and blitzes from everywhere. The line is rattled. RB miss a key block Glennon tries to scramble with nowhere to go, SAFETY!!!

    C) TN wins coin toss, defers to second half, NCST still elects to kick the ball, smh. TN lines up with CP and DY deep. The call is return left. NCST sends The kick, pins DY in the left corner, no time for the wall to set up. DY shakes off the first wave and finds a crease heading right. NCST over pursues and DY breaks free up the right sideline for the score.

    D) Good kickoff by NCST, CP catches it at the 5 and heads north. Solid 20 yrd return my CP to the 30. Bring out the O. Vols lineup in Pro form. Ryvera at TE. JH wide left. CP slot and DR wide Right. NCST decides to dbl JH and send Amerson to single cover DR, LB on CP. Neal is single back. Play is iso left. Tiny makes a great kick and reaches the LB. DT also seals the center and MLB. Neal runs to and through daylight with only one safety to beat. Jab step left and cutback right, Neal is to the races 15...10...5...TD Vols.
