Players react to Rogers suspension

Several Tennessee upperclassmen were made available to the media after Thursday’s practice, and they had plenty to say about All-SEC receiver Da'Rick Rogers' suspension.

  • going to be really tough to get over this regardless of what the players are saying ; absolutely hate this situation happening a week before the start of the season ...almost exactly like the JJ situation last year ..UNREAL +1

I was thinking the same thing: this is the second consecutive year we've lost an upcoming Jr key contributor and former 5-star recruit a week or two before the first game.

The player reactions are exactly what I would expect. Stiff upper lip, carry on, step up, etc. Mentally, I do not expect the loss of DR to have the impact that Hunter's injury did last year. In fact, DR's departure will probably improve the team's mentality.

Physically though, the loss is huge and I think changes our outlook tremendously. We were already at zero TE depth and a big question mark in the running game. Now we have exactly one proven, reliable SEC receiver (Hunter), and quite a few injured freshmen behind that. The expectations now on CP are ginormous. If he is not everything we have hoped for, our offense will be in serious, serious trouble. I hate even saying this, but the reality of the situation appears very cold and hard to me at this point. This team has no margin for errors, screwups, stupid mistakes, injuries, or any of the other inevitable adversities that hit a football team. They are going to have to actually step up, not just talk about it. Now, we as fans need to be there supporting the guys all the way as they fight through the tough situations they have been placed in, through no fault of their own.

Now, more than ever, GO BIG ORANGE.

I agree losing Da'Rick's a big loss -- but if Hunter's at least back to where he was last year, I think he can produce without Da'Rick in contrast to Da'Rick struggling last year to produce without him. I think Hunter's the key to our passing game: he'll get open & make plays. Once he does, he'll get the double-teams that free up CP, Rivera and the rest of our receiver corps.

I know the running game hasn't proven anything on the field yet, but I'm hopeful it will. Neal was the fastest player on last year's team, and he's now apparently a key RB -- and he hasn't fumbled all summer. Devrin has done very well and Lane has done well. We have an OL of Jr's & Sr's who have had the spotlight of attention all off-season. I think they'll get it done in the running game this year. At least, I hope their running success against our defense is a sign of their ability and not our defense's deficiency. If it's the latter, we have big problems on both sides of the ball that are so fundamental, losing Da'Rick will be trivial by comparison.

  • Look for Cody Blanc to show Dooley and Chaney knew what they were doing in bringing him in. Lots of the same measurables; just needs seasoning.

  • Everyone needs to pick up the tempo and realize that the players that are all Vol and want to be on this team are on it. We don't need to worry about the others. We have a defense that want to fly around and hit people in the mouth, that's a good thing. We have an O-line playing with a chip on their shoulder, positive number 2. The deepest receiving corp in the SEC, if not nationally, and a running back that makes Usain Bolt look slow. Rocky Top has some great days in the near future.

  • WRK, how does it feel to be called out by Zach Rogers? “You’ve just got to be on your toes, 24/7. If some guy goes down, the next guy’s gotta be ready to come up. We’ve got a good group of guys right now that can step up in place of Da’Rick. We’ll get it done, regardless.”

Its not a stupid question until you ask it.

  • Our receiving corp was rated as 1st or 2nd in the nation for the entirety of the group, not just because of one "superstar". We don't go from incredible to horrible with the loss of one very gifted and extremely troubled player. We are still extremely talented. These guys may have to step up, but doesn't that happen every year when a senior leaves and someone takes over his position. Let's give the rest of the receivers some credit and wait this out. Sure, it sucks. Noone would have chosen this. But, it happens and the fan in each of us needs to realize that the rest of the guys need to be mentally confident and seeing "fans" write about how we are doomed and this is a major blow that kills the season, etc, shows them that "fans" have no faith in their ability. It really isn't all about DR. This is a team and lots of talent. Let's get on with the season.

    Half agree.

Difficult to say Rogers struggled to produce when he was all SEC and led the league in receptions.

I do think Neal can lead the running game to a monster year. 3rd year starters on the line + freakish athlete at RB sounds like a good recipe for a breakout year.

  • I think they're putting too much importance on Da'Rick. He's an outstanding athlete, yes. But he's only a man. Any lack of production on the offense, and mental breakdowns cannot be placed on him or the lack of him thereof. The only people stopping these young men from succeeding in the air is themselves. Nonetheless, I believe without a doubt Dooley knows this and will instill it in them.

  • I was so looking forward to seeing what we could do with JH, DR and CP on the field at the same time! In my opinion, that was going to be an undefendable lineup. Now, we'll never get to see that.

We'll be ok with JH, CP and one of the others. But what this does is make us very vulnerable to another WR injury like we experienced last year.

  • Some time it,take something like this to wake the team up,and, to know they cant make the, same mistake as dg did. He his had many chances and have not taken care,of busness and now the big dollars are gone for now. Didnt want to see it but know,it was coming so dont be suprised if bray will be,going soon. You havd to grow up and treat people with respect. That said got vol 10 and 2 deason

Everyone is on edge. Program needs some good news. Like beating NC State.

  • Stop the pity party! He brought this on himself and should be ashamed what he's done to his team mates and the Vol Nation. We have some really talented new receivers and it's the coaches job to get them ready posthaste. We'll be fine if everyone---players, coaches, and fans pull together!

The game becomes that little bit extra more important for Dooley. We come out guns blazing and Da'Rick goes down in Vols history as the functional equivalent of Onterrio Smith

  • Too bad this kid seems too dumb to realize there are consequences for how you behave. I would have really liked to have seen how teams could have covered him and Hunter and Patterson on the field at the same time. The NC State secondary has a lot less to worry about now.

  • Sad day but I'm sure Da'Rick will be more sad when he wakes up and realizes he had the potential to be 1st round and sign a guaranteed contract worth millions..
I mean I know this is still fresh to everyone and we don't know what the end result will be but who would take him early in the draft now with all the off-the-field bs he seems to delve into..
I think we will be ok at wideout but this directly puts more pressure on a)the running game and b)the ever-deteriorating tight ends.

    My questions are:
1- Considering Da'ricks unpredictable personality and his lack of commitment shown does he get another chance in BIG Orange if he plays his cards right (ala Honeybadger) or has his ship sailed and we should now openly aim our cannons at his vessel as it departs the Tennessee river? (apollogize if this has already been answered elsewhere)
    And
2- Anyone agree that the matchup with NC state looks a little tighter with Hunter possibly being shadowed by NC States All-Everything DB David Amerson all night long??
