Please get off the Gruden train

  • Guys-
No way Gruden is coming to TN. Yes he has land and his wife is from here, but he's also going to have the Cowboys, Eagles, Panthers, Chargers, and possibly the Saints to choose from IF he wants to return to coaching. There's also Miami if Golden leaves. They're now going to have a new AD, which was the reason he didn't go there previously. He was much closer and more vocal on that opportunity in 2011 than he ever has been with UT. It's just not going to happen. The longer we wait, the less chance we'll have of landing him as well because more and more opportunities will become available.

I don't want Petrino b/c of his background and we also need someone more defensive oriented for success in the SEC. I'm beginning to think it's Gary Patterson or Charlie Strong or it's Dooley again for next year.

  • Whether he is or isn't , it gives some people hope out of a hopeless situation right now and something to talk about. That's what message boards are for.

Definitely agree, but TOS are meant for the uneducated and hopeless stabs at bringing someone in like that. I'd like to think we pay 247 so we can filter through the nonsense and have educated information and opinions about the situation. I'm all for it if he could come, but he's just not, so time to move on.

You have no idea what jon gruden is going to do. Its just a guess just like those of us that want him. What does it hurt to hope? You never know he mite want the job. I'm tired of all these people acting like they have a clue what's going on with the ut athletic dept. The truth is nobody but hart knows. So don't act like we are living a dream by wanting gruden. Cause we mite just get him. He may not even be the #1 choice for hart who knows.

  • I have no clue or say whether Gruden comes to Knoxville or goes somewhere else. I think it would be foolish to think that UT doesnt have a shot at him if UT wants to really pursue him. I know Gruden has been interested in this job for years, whether it is at the top of his list i dont know, i know its close, but close doesnt win the race. I firmly believe if UT wants him and he wants UT the money will come from everywhere to get the deal done. I just refuse to believe that the BIG MONEY wouldnt pull the trigger this time after seeing what holding back has put us in. But we dont know if Dooley is even going to be fired.

    You would take Kevin Steele??

Why? So our defense can go from 112th nationally to 114th?

What are u talking about go look at his history as a coordinator and his ability to recruit. U basing this off one bowl game?

Great recruiter, average at best coach. The one year he was Bama's D-coordinator was there worst year w/ Saban. Then Kirby came in and helped turn it around.

  • The reason the Gruden name keeps coming up is because it makes the fire Dooley decision really easy. Yes, Gruden would be a better coach for UT than Dooley. Yes, people would give him a few years to get us back on top, so a step back in continuity would not matter nearly as much. The problem is once you get past Gruden, it is much tougher imagining this fanbase being patient with Mullen, Strong, Smart, etc...

Also, how are people tossing around Petrino as a serious option? That would be the worst possible PR move for the university ever. It would be the easiest example for the general public to use about a school being so desperate for wins it would hire an absolute snake to compete. Tressel or Butch Davis would both have much less blowback than a Petrino hire.

  • I would be disgusted with a Petrino hire. That, to me, is sacrificing who we are as a program for desperation. Way worse than Kiffin.

I'm willing to take an up and comer (Strong, Smart, whomever) who has proven that...

    1) He can develop relationships with assistants and players who WANT to play for and coach with him instead of alienating and rushing for jobs that pay less money.
    2) CAN MAKE SOUND COACHING DECISIONS IN A FOOTBALL GAME.
    3) Can count to 11.
    4) Can teach players proper alignment, technique, and tackling in less than three years.
    5) Can go an entire game without calling a timeout to avoid improper alignment.
    6) Can, at least one game every 1-2 years, outcoach and outscheme someone for a win.

I believe Dooley is a great guy, a great administrator, but he is not a good head football coach at this level. He does not outcoach, he does not motivate, players see to play well and hard in spite of him and instead of for him.

It appears to me that he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room all the time, smarter than decades of basic football basics like- "if your defense sucks, keep it off the field", etc. He is smart, but he might be outthinking himself a little.

"Count it down with me. Five, four, three, two, one. The national champion is clad in Big Orange!"
