Podcast on SEC coaching changes, Gruden

  • Dan Wetzel's podcast today focuses on the expected coaching changes in the SEC. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I found it really interesting and totally fair. They actually spend a lot of time in the beginning on Tennessee, and since Gary Parrish of Memphis was the guest host, he was able to chime in with a lot of the local take on everything and more details than what the national columnists give.

While a lot of your reaction to their discussion will depend on your stance on Dooley, I thought they did a good job of breaking down the situation. They were pretty fair in weighing both the situation he walked in to as well as the fan expectations in a school like UT. They also talked about Gruden for a few minutes, not just "oh here's the rumors floating around", but also talked about his personality, whether he would be a good fit, etc. Anyway, I thought I'd post because I found it pretty entertaining.

Haha. Yeah it's pretty long. I've only listened to the first half, but a good 75% of it was about UT. Basically, they lamented the situation that Dooley walked in to (the Kiffin cloud of sanctions, lack of roster depth, Bray/Hunter injuries, etc.), but the facts of life in the SEC is that the expectations are high. The discussed his SEC record (only 4 wins in 2 1/2 years, same as Kiffin in one year, only 1 win in last 11 was Vandy in OT), and they basically said that fair or not, when those are the bullet points that go under a coaches name, that doesn't bode well for him. Also said the the UT fan base is hopeless, and coaching changes bring hope, and hope fills seats. There's a lot more there, but those are the main points.
