It’s almost (spring) football time in Tennessee, and govols247 is getting you ready with a position-by-position look the Vols — starting today with quarterback.

  • if worley gets hurt,i can say we will have a good back up waiting, thers something about peterman sticks out.
between worley and peterman wes which 1 can run and pick yards up instead of throwing the ball to the head coach?
alot of times last season if bray would have just tried to run the ball instead of throwing mile out bounds,he could have picked up yards. thanks wes

  • I think Peterman is going to show out this spring. He had arguably moved ahead of Worley last spring before breaking his finger if i remember correctly. That being said, i think either of the guys on campus can run this offense, and do a good job of it. They have what should be the best line in the country protecting them, so that should help. Looking forward to seeing what these guys have! Go Vols!

  • How many career rushing yards did Bray have? I'm willing to bet 8.

I'm not Wes but.... Peterman is the better athlete of the two, he is that guy that can pick up those extra yards. And from what I hear if he can run the offense he could be our first truly mobile quarterback in a while. And I think thats what CBJ wants, all love and respect to Worley, but he is more of a pocket passer.

  • I guess Worleys 1 TD was the Pick 6 at Vandy?

  • Is it me or does the picture above of peterman remind you of Tebow if you glance by it? Here's hoping he can play like him at least! I've been excited to see what peterman can do in this new offense but I won't be disappointed if Worley wins out, they're both great ambassadors of the team and school! VFL!

I thought the same thing looking at the pic!

  • Little mistake in the article. Dobbs is not from Lassiter HS in Marietta. He's from Alpharetta HS in Alpharetta. Coincidentally while reading this and thing about Worley I thought of Georgia's backup Hutson Mason who is from Lassiter. He and Worley both played in offenses where they slung it all over the field out of the shotgun and set all kind of passing records. Neither has had an opportunity yet. Interested to see if they pan out in the SEC. Another similarity was they weren't recruited heavily by the instate school. If I recall Spurrier didn't offer Worley. And richt didn't come to the table for Mason until the 11th hour. We'll see. Go vols!

  • Yes, slytyger, I noticed it immediately. And both from the same area in Florida. Four guys on scholarship will be on this team next Fall who can play QB with anyone. That's almost a sin of plenty. Redshirt Ferguson. Dobbs will graduate as a junior when Ferguson will be a redshirt soph and Ferguson will have the team for his Junior and Senior years. Patience guys and injuries could make it happen sooner. I remember two QB's going down in the same game, I believe against Florida, and a young freshman named Payton Manning took the wheel and never gave it up. The second of the two QB's that got hurt that game went on to become a perenial Baseball All-Star for the Colorado Rockies, Todd Helton.

  • I really hope Peterman starts. It's been way too long since we have had a QB with some ability to get outside of the pocket and gain some yards if the play breaks down.

  • Anyone think we will see a 2 QB system like we did with Ainge and Brent Schaffer (I think I spelled that right lol)? Either it be with Worley/Peterman, Worley/Dobbs or Peterman/Dobbs? I don't think it would be with Peterman/Dobbs because they have the same skill set but just throwing that out there. Do y'all think Ferguson could see some playing time if we went with a 2 QB system?

my thoughts exactly.. I dont like rooting against Worley, i like him, seems like a good kid with a good head on his shoulders, but it would be nice to get a guy who can make some plays with his feet. I just think the way the game is played and officiated now, teams with athletic, mobile quarterbacks are so much more difficult to defend. And it's not like Peterman doesnt have an arm..

  • Would like to see great competition with Worley and Peterman, and see Dobbs in mop up duty. Hoping for a MOBILE quarterback this year!

  • I hope we don't have a 2 QB system. We need a full time leader at QB that has command of the offense. Like Wes said, hopefully one or both of these guys will step up and earn the starting job. I personally think that both are going to put on a great show this spring and make it tough for the coaches to choose their number 1 guy. They both seems like really hard workers and smart young men.

  • I'll admit that I sometimes can't see true talent when it's right in front of me. For example, I watched Michael Jordan his freshman year, heard Al McGuire raving about him and how he was going to be the best player in the game by his senior year, and all I saw was a skinny guy sticking out his tongue.

In the same way, I frequently can't gauge arm strength even when it's in front of me. I could see Steve Bartkowski had a cannon for an arm, when Heath Shuler was playing, I could see he was really powerful, but other times I can't tell how good an arm a guy has. Of course, as Peyton shows now, and Montana used to show, arm strength isn't what defines a successful QB.

Having said all that, to me it appears that Worley has to have everything just right for his throws to have a lot of zip, and when things AREN'T just right, it appears that secondary guys can make up a lot of ground on his passes when they're in the air.

I've said here before that I'd prefer Worley, as the most experienced QB, earn the starting job, but am I the only UT fan worried about his arm strength? Everything else about him I value greatly -- his loyalty, his leadership, his high character, and so on.

  • I have faith that the coaches will find the QB to give the team the greatest chance of success. I am guessing that Peterman and Worley enter spring neck and neck. I know Peterman has zero game experience; so Worley has the edge there. But Peterman can sling the ball and is more mobile; so he has the edge there. It will be interesting to see who can bring the most complete skillset to the table.
