Pre-Spring Primer: Safety

It’s almost (spring) football time in Tennessee, and govols247 is getting you ready with a position-by-position look at the Vols — continuing today with safety.

  • Besides Kicker and Punter, Safety is by far the biggest concern on this team. The staff owes it to Waggner to give him a full season at CB. Randolph is a shoe in at FS, but Brewer who knows with him, even when healthy stunk last year. Maybe Orta can step in? But if McNeil does win the job he will be thrown right into the fire playing against NC State and team that loves to throw the ball around.

  • I think Byron Moore realy brings it this spring and come's out with a starting spot.

He looks like he is running in mud when he is out on the field. I was extremely disappointed with him last year and thought he was going to be an immediate contributor.

  • a hard-hitting Texan whose recruiting videos looked like a series of NASCAR crashes.

Nice analogy! I'll be lookin' for the JPM vs. Jet-Dryer hits... But hope he has some time to learn the position before he's thrown into a game.

Questions seem to be the order of the 'Spring' and 'Fall'. Will DaRick straighten out and perform, will Hunter be fully recovered, will Lathers be able to perform, will the OL and our running game improve, will our kickers improve, will we have enough safeties to perform well, will the JUCO's perform well on the D-line, will the transition to a different type of defense be smooth... If I were Dooley I wouldn't be able to sleep. By the way; I am hearing that Waggner will open the spring at CB. Not sure what to think. I personally hope he does but I also don't think Brewer will be fully recovered in the fall which complicates things. Thanks and +1

  • "with the addition of McNeil, a hard-hitting Texan whose recruiting videos looked like a series of NASCAR crashes"

Mr. Rucker you do have a wonderful way with words. I cannot wait to see this defence out on the field. I'm not thinking that they will pitch nothing but shutouts, but I believe we have the players on DE to make things very uncomfortable for other teams. If we can get consistant pressure, then we will beat some teams this year.

  • According to TOS, Brewer is moving to OLB, Waggner will open at CB while Tino Thomas and Orta will open at safety.

I have always thought that he would eventually make that move, be interesting to see what happens

  • I think the secondary is going to be the most uncertain group of the spring and into the fall.

Saw several player's who looked like they were running in mud last year, I just think he's going to be the contributor we all expected.
