Question About a Dooley Extension...

  • It is becoming evident elite players won't sign with us this until there is stability at the head coaching position. I follow recruiting daily so what transpired over the past 2 weeks was hard to swallow. I know we never led for Ramsey but we weren't even in contention for his signing. Then Jason Hatcher, a guy who has visited multiple times, a guy who everybody felt good about takes 1 visit to USC and we get kicked to the curb. Then you see the #1 CB in the nation come through Tennessee to visit both us and Vandy. He comes away way more impressed w/ Vandy! Let that sink in.

    I don't know if I could go through another off-season like this. Every prospect who may like the Vols, have every other coach in there ears telling them "Dooley won't be there next year, why would you want to play for a lame duck coach"

    We are in a tough spot. This season will effect the programs direction for the next 4 years. So after thinking about it I think Dooley must have a GREAT year to be retained. 8 wins (including a win over the Big 4) or 9 wins... 8 wins seems to be the popular # being thrown out there as a successful year. But 8 wins w/o a win against the Big 4 would mean Dooley went 0-12 in his 1st 3 years these teams. There is a very good chance this years team will be more talented then the team we field in 2013. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable extending Dooley's contract with those numbers. You also can't bring him back on his last year because we will have another off-season like the one we are having now.

    Tennessee NEEDS Dooley to succeed this year. We have to win 9 games to shut up all the pundits. People may say I am asking to much out of Dooley and this team, but I don't think I am. We have to win a game we aren't supposed to. Do we really want Dooley if he can't win a game he isn't supposed to? I wouldn't. We are going to be favored by Vegas in 8 games, we have to win 1 of those other 4or I say we move on. It's asking a lot but when you have the offense we have you should have high expectations.

    That easily would get him an extension. Not sure how many years, but definitely a new contract.

    Personally, I think it would. It may not get him more than a couple of years, but I think it would warrant an extension and at least more time for him to be evaluated.

    I get your point, but how could Tennessee fire a coach who wins eight games after what the Vols have been through the past few years? It's not easy to win nine games in the SEC, period.

    It is evident from this post, in my viewpoint, what Dooley is doing is not enough for the fan base. I started following the Vols in 2006, and it has been a nightmare since. I am seeing a very good program being put together at Tennessee. Whether Dooley stays or goes, the next Coach will have it very easy with the framework that has been started. My feeling is that if given time we will see the rewards of what Coach Dooley has started, whether he is at the helm or not, and I hope that smarter people than you or I will see him through all of this.

    8 regular season wins plus a bowl win against a quality opponent equals contract extension. But I'd like to see that resolved by mid season by a couple of big wins. He has done everything possible in the off season to put the Vols in position to do that. Dooley, us fans, and the University of Tennessee NEEDS that to happen. GO VOLS!

    I totally agree, I was just answering Drizzy's poser about 8 regular season wins but no big ones garnering an extension. +1

  • Margin of victory can't be understated either. We can't be losing by 14+ to The big 4 on our schedule, we have to show we are getting closer to those teams.

    If we stay healthy we will win 8 or 9 games. We have 3 1st Rd picks on our offense! Only other team in the country that can say that is USC. If healthy, coaching will be what holds us from winning 9 games.
