Question for us former Dooley fans

  • It is very hard to not be beside myself after tonight's gane, I really liked Dooley and very much wanted him to enjoy a long and successful tenure here at Tennessee. During the season, my faith that he could field a quality team began to dissolve. The turning point for me was the Florida game, with tonight being the final straw. What about you guys? When did your support and/or belief in the big guy really start to erode?

  • Miss st. Really changed my outlook on him, and also just tired of being out coached

  • As you guys probably know, I've been one of the biggest Dooley supporters. I still support him while he is head coach, but I also support the decision to go in another direction with a proven winner and recruiter. I was sitting six rows up on the 50 when Dooley called off the dogs and settled for overtime. I never in my life have screamed at someone so loudly. That being said, today.

  • It started last season with Kentucky. Tonight finished the deal for me. Too bad, the guy has been a quote machine.

  • Miss State.

That was a game we should have won. We all want to beat the Bama's and Florida's, but you've first got to take the baby steps of beating the MSU's and South Carolina's of the league.

When we kept losing the same way, over and over and over again, it just showed me that DD didn't have what it takes to not just win a championship, but even be competitive here in the SEC.

  • MSU then every game after that validated decision..Stil was pissed after loss but maybe nation can be united in a great hire. Hard to believe anyone but family would be for cdd now

  • It must have been building up because I don't believe one call would dissolve my support. But it came with about 40 seconds to go in the 4th quarter today. By the time the clock hit 0:00 I knew his time read the same way.

Started to erode during the GA game, but that decision today sealed the deal. It was unbelievable and unforgivable really. I was at the game and blew a gasket.

  • Honest question for those of you who were devout supporters: What made you think he was a competent coach? I mean as far as in-game coaching and motivating, did you ever see any evidence? I always liked the guy but he just never struck me as being able to manage a game or a team.

Wasn't this a thread intended for us former Dooley fans?

  • I've never been a fan, but I wanted to be proven wrong and I wanted him to succeed. I was hopeful until UK last season. This season I started out neutral. By th end off the MSU game I felt his time here was over and that it would take a miracle for him to be here past the seasons end. I personally think he has known since then as well. this team has regressed since that game.

I never trashed Dooley, as I want to support whoever is coaching he VOLS.

  • I am as big of a Dooley supporter as there is on here, but it is time to move on (from Dooley). He should be fired tomorrow. If no other big name coaches want the job, hire Fulmer and let's move forward.

  • My support didn't end until the end of the fourth overtime today against Mizzou. However, my confidence in Dooley as a head coach ended after Florida. We had everything going for us in that game, and got crushed. IMO, that was D-Day for D-Dooley. Looks like a change is coming on The Hill. I agree with what the first poster said; whoever we hire, we MUST back him 100%. It wouldn't be fair to the new coach to continue being apathetic, and it would reflect terribly in recruiting as well.

I think we were just hungry and desperate to return to revelence. We wanted to believe that it could happen. Dooley occupied the HC position and we wanted to believe that he could take us to the promised land.. He gained our faith by default. He made plenty of mistakes, but he was our guy.

    Ditto here. Exactly the same.

  • Ms St game did it for me. They have a saying in Texas Big Hat and No Cows Dooley looked like and spoke like the guy to get it done. He is not that guy. I appreciate his effort.

    100% the same for me.

I still think it would have been best for the program for us to win out and retain him one more year. From a roster perspective he built a team with the talent to beat anyone in the East which is why I get so annoyed when people say the gap is widening with UF, UGA, and Scar. I also gave him the benefit of the doubt because Bray isn't a winner yet IMO (has turned a corner the last 2 weeks I think). The players have also played hard for him all year.

That said, he is just so lost from a game management perspective I can't support him anymore. We just get out coached every week.

  • For me, the MSU game was the one where I said "Oh censored" for the first time this season. After the Troy debacle, I still supported Dooley, but thought he had to win out in order to have any chance at making it to 2013, and knew the "keep Dooley" sentiment was in its final stages. With 40 seconds to play in regulation against Missouri, I finally threw up my hands and joined the "Dump Dooley" crowd. I was listening to the game online because I was at work, and the moment Mizzou kicked the winning FG, I turned off the radio app and said "Goodbye Dooley". That was just the latest (and most costly) case of game mismanagement late in a half, and in that situation under "do or die" conditions, there was no reason to sit on the clock and hope for the best in OT. If Dooley had gambled and lost the game, you could have at least said he went down swinging. But instead we got a coach playing scared instead of playing to win. That's not Tennessee football, and Dooley has to know that as much as anyone else around that program.

  • For me it was Florida, hands down. I tried not to buy into the hype. But Lee Corso and ESPN coming in and picking UT made me forget it, and I jumped on the bandwagon even though it all looked similar to the start of last season. Florida hadn't yet hit their stride and Driskel didn't look like he commanded the offense. We had the opportunity to beat them and silence Dooley's critics.

We were up in the first half, but you could start to see the the characteristics of a Dooley team coming out. Remember when we were driving and on the Florida half Tiny had a holding and false start, then Kyler Kerbyson comes in for ONE play and gets a false start, drive stalls and I belive we settled for 3.

Second half starts (which we had all seen since year 1, the lack of halftime adjustments and knew what was coming). Then comes the next Dooley mark, the missed XP. You see where I'm going...in every game you start to see those little things that contribute to the impending L.

But, I'm starting to ramble, to answer your question it was midway through the 3Q of Florida when Chaney/Dooley panicked, and abandoned the run game being down by only 7. Bray was clearly flustered and they kept forcing him to throw the ball. Incomplete after incomplete, and an exhausted D is right back on the field.

I post on GVX under the same name. I made these exact comments under this name and said we needed a new coach after that game.
