Quinn & Other "Diamonds in the Rough"

  • I know there's been a lot of chatter about Woody Quinn and whether or not he will live up to his potential. Of course, what generates this conversation most is the fact that he only has two autonomous stars next to his name.

But, it got me thinking...can anyone name a few former Vols who were very underrated coming out of HS and lived up to be amazing players? (I'm talking two-stars, maybe a few three-stars.) Herman Lathers is one that comes to my mind, but even he was a three-star that had offers from Baylor and Stanford. Inky Johnson was a 2-star.

I figured it'd be a fun thinking game. Chip in if you'd like to credit a former Vol who outplayed his recruiting ranking.

No, Mayo was a pretty elite prospect. He was pretty much a consensus four-star, I believe.

Yeah, I see now that he was a low-end four-star on one site. I wouldn't say he was an under-the-radar prospect by any means, but he wasn't a borderline-five-star guy, either. He probably performed a bit above his ranking, especially when you take his NFL success into account.

I guess it depends how far you would go back because these star ratings havnt been around that long? Back in the day coaches actually had to pound the pavement to find these recruits at their Highschools and didn't recruit much from Knoxville? Only sources we had was the Newspaper and word of mouth? They didn't have combines and All of this fancy stuff they have now? And correct me if I'm wrong? Their we're alot more legends coming out of UT than there has been around here in the past 5 or 6 years? Social Media has really Hyped Up the recruiting game to the point an average fan can get more info on a player now? Problem is? You can't believe everything you hear on the Internet because only then would we ALL be French Models....lol

Luke Stocker, Jarrod Shaw, Denarious Moore, Dallas Thomas and Tauren Poole were all three stars. None were all SEC but all guys you can win with IMO.
