RB situation

  • I just went back and read the Alden Hill 1st year review and I have to say that we are in better position than I thought at RB. Not sure why I was thinking Lane was going to be a senior. This opinion may be based on the fact that I think Lane could still be great, but we also have Young, Hill, and Tom Smith after this upcoming season.

The point of this is, we focus a lot on here about Green, Kumara, Collins, etc... Is this based on people believing it is a need or because the RB position is "fashionable" (for lack of a better word) to really want to hit a home run at?

  • With the injury-prone nature of the position you try to get a good RB every year. Like any HS player, they may be great or may be a bust, so the percentages are better by taking one every year...the best available.

Its not a stupid question until you ask it.

  • We are looking for a game changer at RB. We just don't have a player that scares defenses and can break off a big play at any time.

    ^^^^^This^^^^^^

The backs we have are serviceable, but none of them is a threat to take any carry to the house.

  • I think Watson could take it to the house and if Neal wouldn't go down when somebody got close to him I think he could too

Kind of the thing, the more you look, the more you find. I guess with the needs on D and OLine, the amount of effort we are putting toward RB confuses me... but you all bring great points.

    And R. Neal too!

  • I think the point of getting good quality RBs every year is crucial and while we've been getting average backs in the past 5 years the matter of fact is we've yet to have a Gurley, Marshall, Richardson, Lacy, Lattimore, Yeldon, etc. and having a game changer at RB can make a bif difference rather quickly, and in the last 5-7 years UT has lacked that.

The alternative is to be like LSU and have a solid platoon of four and five stars that consistently rotate. And bama does this to some extent but they've typically been using a two studded heisman rotation. One prepping the other for a heisman run.

Man I wish that was our complaint... We need to pull a game changer at RB, plain and simple.

Does Hardesty or Foster ring a bell? It amazes me that people soon forget how good those two were. Even Coker was a better than those two at tailback if he could have stayed out of trouble. They may be out of your range, but Houston & Riggs had big runs throughout their careers too. Heck, even Brown is proving he was a good back & if he would have stayed we might have gotten to see it.

Getting back to who we have now, did you guys forget the fact that Neal was the 2nd best back in the conference behind Lattimore before he got hurt? UT's tendency to throw the ball took away from his carries & splitting time with Lane didn't help his numbers either. The fact of the matter is that if UT would have had a winning record none of you guys would be whining about who we do or do not have. I'm perfectly fine with both of those guys & think Young/Watson will prove to be better than most of you guys realize.
