Recruiting ? For the board

  • Just want to get everyone's opinion and in no way trying to start anything but IF UT hires a coach with the caliber of Gruden (doesn't have to be him, just of his caliber), how many of the current commitments will end up on the outside looking in? Just curious if a coach like that would even take a commitment from Barnes, Kendricks or other recruits that may not be so highly rated but are all-Vol.

  • It probably depends on how much continuity there is on the staff. From what I understand of recruiting aside from a few rockstars most of it is really a matter of assistants building relationships anyway.

That's my understanding of how it is as well. I was thinking, say you get Gruden and all these highly rated guys all the sudden want to come to UT, do they say thanks but no thanks to guys like that.

  • Those are some good questions. I think with a big name coach recruiting would really improve & would allow us to land more 4 & 5 star recruits that are so important to winning in this conference. Recruiting is critical & we are consistently ranked very low in the conference which needs to change. It's about the Jimmy's & Joe's. Go Vols!

We need a coach to at least close the gap between us and Bama, UF, UGA and LSU in terms of recruiting. We're so off base with them right now it's ridiculous.

Good question. If a coaching change happens this will be very interesting to watch. You would think the new coaches are going to want to do their own evaluations of these guys. If you're not hiring a current college coach who is already scouting and recruiting right now, this process is going to take a while. You've got to not only evaluate the current commitments, but also the current targets and anyone else the previous staff wasn't going after. That is a lot of work going in to your first signing class, and this the area where continuity of assistant coaches will make the biggest impact.

Recruiting is the biggest unknown with a coaching change probably. It will be interesting to watch. I just know it needs to improve though...and drastically.
