I was wondering about Ryan's rhubarb and rhododendron farm being trampled by rhinoceroses, exacerbating his rheumatism so badly a Rhodes scholar couldn't fix it.

    Now that's just rhidiculous.

Really? Ryan's reporting record is renowned in Ruckerworld when it comes to recruiting.

    Any takers?! No? Hello?

    Crickets.....

Seriously though, Ryan don't expect you to go crazy like Wes, but let's learn some more about you! Has it always been journalism? Has it always been football? And a random one....if you got to have a completely non-political question with one US President who would it be?

All right, let's do this ...

Yes, it's pretty much always been journalism. I've been doing this since I was in high school. I honestly don't remember what I wanted to be before then. Probably a sports broadcaster before I realized my voice sounds almost as bad as Wes' on the radio.

I've always mostly covered football — that's obviously the sport of choice almost everywhere in Tennessee — and that's definitely one of my favorite sports. Baseball and hockey are my other favorites.

On the U.S. president question, I'm assuming this means dead or alive? If so, I'd probably go with Abraham Lincoln and ask him what he thinks of himself being the star of a seemingly stupid movie — and book, apparently — in which he's featured as a vampire hunter/killer.

    Ryan, what are you wearing?

No, not necessarily. And that's one of the 1,278 great things about this job.

Hoe do you get recruits phone numbers? Or do they call you?

Any way I can get them. I don't want to give away any of my secrets — there are plenty of potential copycats out there watching — but let's just say it's not always easy to get them. Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't.

How many times do you get the feeling a recruit would rather walk over hot coals then do a phone interview?

Fairly often. It depends on the type of prospect. If it's a big-time recruit with a ton of offers who gets multiple phone calls from reporters almost every day, that's the impression I get from a lot of kids — when they actually answer the phone. If it's someone who doesn't have a ton of offers or doesn't do interviews all the time, they're usually happy to talk. And sometimes there's the rare kid who's a big-time prospect but still doesn't mind doing it.

Obviously any guy can have a radio show, ever thought about it?

I have a face made for radio, so I'm always open to it. Actually, those of you who have listened to Wes' show since the beginning may recall that I originally co-hosted the show with him — I was clearly just the co-pilot, though — before Swain jumped on board. That was when NOBODY knew who I was.

Uhh ... Kevin, you still reading? Best boss ever. biggrin

In all seriousness, though, I really do enjoy working with both Kevin and Wes. They're both really good at what they do, and they're good guys.

Have you ever done something really crazy that not many people know about? If so what was it?

Interesting question. I can't think of anything off the top of my head — nothing that qualifies as "really crazy" in my book, anyway — but again, I'm not Wes.

What's your favorite thing about what you do?

Almost accidentally skipped this one. My favorite thing about what I do is talking to and meeting all kinds of different people — in this case, mostly recruits and their coaches. To me, that's the coolest thing about being a reporter. Covering sports for a living obviously is awesome, too, although people who don't do this for a living don't understand the natural drawbacks sometimes. But it mostly is a really fun job that seldom feels like a job.

Has a recruit ever yelled at you for calling them?

No, but a person I accidentally reached by dialing the wrong number has. As I mentioned earlier, it's not always easy to get recruits' phone numbers.

Will the Cubs ever win a World Series?

The first yes or no question I'm genuinely torn about. I'm going to say yes, but only because the odds suggest it's bound to happen at some point, and they are a large-market team. The only MLB teams I would say may be in danger of never winning a World Series are the ones that are in tough divisions and don't spend much money.

When the Cards won the title a few years back, how often did you rub that in Wes's face, and do you still do it? biggrin

They won the World Series last year, too, but I actually don't rub that in Wes' face too often. He's often in-your-face about the Cubs, but that's not my style.

247 goes bankrupt tomorrow, what would be your dream to cover?

Good question. I've always thought it would be fun to cover baseball, but that's a grueling job that doesn't lend itself to a healthy lifestyle in terms of seeing family and friends and, you know, having time to enjoy yourself. I'd probably say working on another major college beat or an NFL beat would be my preference if I couldn't do this.

Will Starlin Castro ever make an all star team?

More than likely, yes, if his defense doesn't somehow derail his career. It could happen this year. Every team has to be represented on the all-star teams, and I don't know who else from the Cubs deserves to make it. Maybe Ryan Dempster or Bryan LaHair?

That's not a stupid question or anything, but that's unfortunately so far from how it works. I wish it worked like that. Sometimes recruits call us back, but that's only the kids that are easy to work with.

If you could pick one place in the world to visit, where would that be?

There's still so many places I haven't been, so there are dozens of acceptable answers to this question for me — even in the U.S. — but I've always wanted to visit Ireland. Just seems like a lovely place.

    Do you miss Pujols?

I do, but I definitely think the Cardinals made a wise business decision in letting him walk at that price. The Angels will regret that contract in a few years, although they could afford to take the risk. The Cardinals couldn't, and they have a much better chance of competing over the next 10 years because they let him walk.

That said, it's also sad that he now won't be remembered as just a Cardinal, and it no longer will be a shoo-in that he'll get a statue outside Busch Stadium and his number retired by the Cardinals. I think he's still likely to get his number retired by the Cardinals, but he's now going to reach most of his career milestones with the Angels. As a fan of all sports, I much prefer when players stay with a franchise for their entire careers. It's rare these days, unfortunately.
