Rory moves to Nike

  • Non-UT related but Rory Mcilroy signed with Nike this morning and is set to make monster $$... relatively new to the board but does anyone follow golf closely on here or will I be the only one haha

  • im a huge golf fan and watch it fairly regularly, so you arent the only one. I've posted a golf question on here before and there are others. Nice pay day for Rory, btw, and a really smart marketing move by both him and Nike. TW carried the nike golf franchise for years, and now i think it's Rory's turn.

  • $200 million deal reportedly IIRC..........and Nike rips off McDonalds for an ad idea.

I'm a golf course superintendent... To say I follow golf would be putting it mildly, so no, you're not alone. And yes, Rory is about to have more money than he'll know what to do with.

  • Golf addict also! You'll have lots of company on here from folks who love the game. FWIW I hate to see Rory go with Nike but it's a brilliant move by both.

  • Definitely a fan. Big one. In a fantasy golf league, even.

I like Rory and have been following him on Twitter for awhile. If it weren't for him, I never would have known there was a Jumeirah Resorts.

  • It'll be interesting to see if he struggles any with the new clubs and golf balls. I read an article somewhere last week that talked about the different players who struggled a little bit when they made similar switches. Then again, Rory's talent may overcome that.

G-Mac, whom he is very close with, said Rory could basically tee off with a shovel and win...he is just that talented. There are tour pros and then there are the elite. Tour pros go and get the treatment at the manufactuers with launch monitors, etc. The elite have stuff made just for them. You will not find Tiger's ball on the market because he prefers more spin then their tour balls. Rory will have a ball and clubs made just for him. He will be just fine...maybe even better.

  • Big golf fan here. I like the move from Rory's side and LOVE the move from the Nike side. Tiger and Rory really seem to get along well and I love hearing them interact and joke around. I think this will be good for the game.

  • It will be interesting to see if the change in clubs affect his game, although im sure he has been swinging them pretty often in the off season. I am with you guys in that I have always liked him. The guy's swing is pure.

As far as the season goes... I really like DJ having a strong, strong year

I think this will finally be the year DJ wins that elusive first major. I also think Tiger wins his 15th major this season.

I'm a huge good fan myself. I think this will definitely be a positive in the long run but I think it will hurt him a little to start the year. He will have to find what he is comfortable with and that could take a few months to gain that confidence. But he is one of the best, so it won't take long.

  • Tiger HAS to get atleast one major this year. If he doesn't, I'm not sure he'll ever break Nicklaus' record. I admit, I'm pulling for him. I like to see records broken. I think he will finally win another Masters this year. He hasn't won there since 2005 so he's due for one.

Best golf commercial I have ever saw. Nike is brilliant. Huge Rory fan not so much on Tiger, but still think he I'd the best golfer ever. I hope Rory stays grounded and don't let the money and fame go to his head. And I would love to see these two guys battle this year. They both seem to like and respect each other so it should be fun to watch.

Hey jcoope. Where are you a superintendent? Also, what's your take on the ultra dward bermuda for the TN climate? Seen a lot of mid TN golf courses go to that surface in the last couple years.

Huge golf fan here. Love to talk with everyone here during the season.

Currahee Club in Toccoa, GA. Far, far NE GA right on Lake Hartwell (terrible lake btw). My avatar photo is a picture of the course.

We have A-1 bentgrass greens but I think the ultra dwarf's are a no brainer for the entire southeast region. Clubs can save in labor and fungicide costs and the ultra dwarfs (specifically Champion and Mini-verde) are producing putting surfaces that roll every bit as smooth and true as bentgrass. They withstand the summer heat better, it's easier to keep them firm and fast, and they withstand traffic better.

With the higher expectations on clubs from golfers these days (everyone wants to putt on 13's in August), it's a lot easier for a superintendent in the SE to meet these expectations with bermuda vs. bent. You simply cannot maintain bent at these speeds throughout the months of July and August (peak golf season) without fans and even then it's still a HUGE challenge. Plus, bermuda just takes a ton of stress off of superintendents to where they may actually get some sleep at night!

Tons of Ga courses are making the switch as well, especially in the Atlanta area. Namely places like Atlanta Athletic Club and East Lake have made the switch in the last 4-6 years. It just makes more sense for this region.

Sorry for the rambling, but it's my life! Hope I gave some good perspective.

(Shameless plug. Always looking for new members! If anyone is ever interested in any information just PM me. I'd love to answer any questions.)

  • Appreciate the feedback. That's a lot of the same stuff I've heard from many people...except some of the older people at my club that can't hit the ball too high and are worried about not being able to keep the ball on the green.

I'd love to get the bermuda greens, even if we have to shut our course down for a couple months in the summer. Our new superintendent is doing a terrific job at our course. He came up from down your way (Cherokee). Our course has never looked better.
