SAIP, but anyone else notice that . . .

  • . . . for a brief time, during overtime of the UConn defeat of Louisville (and I've been saying for awhile that Strong is moving farther and farther down my wish list), overlapping with the 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30 start games, UT fans had their pick of watching these prospective coaches (if you buy every possible sports package on DirecTV, at least), listed in no particular order:

    Larry Fedora (UNC)
    Jimbo Fisher (FSU)
    Charlie Strong (UL)
    James Franklin (VU)
    Bob Stoops (OK)
    Mike Gundy (OSU)
    Tommy Tuberville (TTU)

    So . . . who ya'll be watchin'? biggrin

Fisher's recruiting ties in FL are just too strong against Stoops and Gundy. Fisher is a higher commodity.

  • Please scratch Franklin from that list. Please.

I don't even want to consider that possibility. Mostly because I don't like vomiting.

  • I have mixed feelings on Strong. I am hopefull that we never get that far down our list. Hopefully one of Gruden, Fisher, Stoops, or Gundy say yes.

  • With all of the speculation about Strong, he may have the same mindset that Kiffen had in the bowl game . . . hope not, because he is one that I wouldn't mind at all on the UT sideline.

Well, I sure don't want him at UT, but I was referring to "the" list, as in national speculation about who might be or is on the initial list of 10 or so. Regardless of what you or I may want, until someone credible confirms that he's not even an option, I'm assuming he's an option, particularly if we swing and miss on a few candidates.

  • Dooley could have won 8 or 9 games with Louisville s schedule. I have no idea why anybody would get excited about hiring Strong. Give me Gruden, Fisher or Stoops. Id get excited with any of those 3.

I know, I know. People consider him on "the list" but I just would be morose if that happened.

While I started out the year as a huge fan of Strong, and only gave a slight lean to Gruden if a change was ultimately made, I then started paying closer attention to him, and he managed to convince me he's not too bright, especially in terms of substitution problems, knowledge of the rules, dealing with the refs, use of timeouts, clock management, etc. As a former outright Strong fan, I was shocked.

JMO, but my prediction is that if we hire him, we'll get Dooley game management decisions and failings, with marginally better recruiting, and a somewhat better defense (defensive guru or not, how could we NOT be better on D?). In other words, an improvement, but not nearly as much as many would predict, and a couple years in, more fan apathay after 3-5 SEC seasons and bowl losses.

I was on the wagon, but I didn't just slip off it; I jumped off it.

In a vacuum, I think he's a far better coach than Strong (see my preceding post), but I'm old school enough to think that we don't want a jerk as coach, AND under no circumstances do we want a coach that came from Vandy.

"Even if you're biting your own nose off to spite your face?" Yes, IMO; even if that. There's another thing UT always does besides beat the poopsie-woopsie out of Vandy, and that's take coaches from them.

  • dober, I think you are one of the better posters on here, but I'm not sure what you, or others, saw in strong. He is an a average coach in a joke of a conference and today just underscored that. Glad you got off that wagon. Few of our candidates who are active today are doing much to impress.

Jon Gruden, sitting on his arse and WINNING! biggrin

Oh, and frosty? My post answered your question. Until this year, I never paid that much attention to him as a HC; I just listened to the constant cheering of all the national talking heads about how he was the next great coach.

  • Well given that Jimbo's O could only muster a 50 yard FG against the Gators in a half, Strong lost to UConn, Tuberville, the defensive minded coach, has his D giving up about 50 to Baylor, Fedora's Tar Heels are getting beat by Maryland, Golden's team almost got beat by Duke, and the fact that Stoops and Gundy aren't going to come to UT..... I'd say Kirby Smart is looking better and better.

  • Make a coaching decision based on one game? Not smart.

Study a coach's entire body of work. Not one season. Not one game.
