SEC Coaches Hot Seat - Pre and Post Season Predictions

  • What SEC head coach do you think is currently on the hottest seat now, and who will be on the hottest seat at the end of the season?

Going into this season I think Dooley is on the hottest seat. However, coming out of the season I think Gene Chizik will be on the hottest seat. It's not because I think Auburn will be a bad team - far from it - but their schedule is a killer and if Alabama spanks them this year I think Chkzik is going to have some explaining to do. He probably won't lose his job but Auburn fans will want results from all these highly ranked recruiting classes and proof that he can deliver without Cam. Joker Phillips and John L. Smith will likely lose their jobs but Kentucky doesn't really care about football and I think Arkansas fans know that Smith is gone of he doesn't produce.

  • Going in, not entirely from his own doing, Dooley's seat is the hottest. Great opportunity to cool that seat early with a 3-0 start. Smith probably doesn't even have a seat, will play this season standing up. I think Muschamp's seat is not hot yet but the kindling is piled up below it. A mediocre season and the torches come in droves.

  • IMO, Dooley has the hottest seat in the SEC right now.

Fast foward to the end of the year, I think Joker Phillips will have the hottest seat in the conference. I'm not advocating James Franklin, but he has taken a Vandy program with zero excitement and sparked at least some interest for such a small, non-traditional program. I think that's a detriment to Joker's job security. If it can be done at Vanderbilt, it can be done at Kentucky. Also, I agree with Carolina. I think Muschamp will have a pretty warm seat at the end of this season. Joker one, Muschamp two.

  • I will counter that and say Franklin. The guy has talked a WHOLE lot and at the end of the day they are still Vanderbilt and will not be able to keep up with loud mouth. They lost 30-something seniors from last year...back to planet earth for Franklin.

  • Why is nobody talking about Richt. He is always on the hotseat, and with the number of players he has lost to off the field issues combined with their lofty expectations he could be in some trouble. If all the losses lead to an 8-4 season I think he sees the door. What do you all think? I compare this to 2005 when we were preseason # 3 and ended up 5-6. Fulmer didn't lose his job immediately (it was his first losing season) but it was that season his seat got really really hot and remained that way until 2008.

  • I don't really think Richt is in danger due to the fact that he signed a contract extension this offseason.

I could see St. Richt being shown the door. Actually very similar to Fulmer in the fact of going to the SEC last year and let go the following year. I think it just all depends. If they lose to Auburn, UT, USC, and Florida, which is unlikely BUT, then I can see him being shown the door and UGA getting Smart.

I don't think Richt's seat is even warm at the start of the season. He had a successful year in 2011. There's been plenty of talk in recent years of his seat being warm, just not so sure it is now. He's certainly welcome to change that though.

  • Dooley probably has the hottest seat in the house right now, but if the mighty Gata's lose to the Vols, Muschamp might wanna put the moving company on speed dial.

Yeah, I hadn't looked at it that way and we know from the Zooker that Jeremy Foley will not hesitate to pull the trigger at any time during the season. Still, I wonder if Foley would can Muschamp after only two seasons.

  • Dooley is the clear hot seat right now, but at the end of the year it'll be Joker(who may even lose his job this year) or Muschamp. I don't see the gators beating anyone they're not supposed to and maybe even flopping in a few games. Since Joker is kind of already in trouble I think the newest hot seat will be Muschamp.

And on a side note, which has already been discussed, Dooley can't just count on this year to remove that hot seat talk. He could win 10 games this year, but if he has a 7 or less win year in '13, he'll be right back on the hot seat.

  • I think Muschamp's seat will be warm after this season.. I think they'll end up 8-4 at best with losses to Texas A&M, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, and maybe South Carolina, Missouri, and Florida State. I see them finishing 4th in the East. Their fans wouldn't like that.

  • I'm probably wrong, but I don't think the coaches at the major programs are on that hot of a seat.

    - Chizik won a national championship two years ago, he's fine.
    - Richt just signed a new contract.
    - Muschamp is similar to CDD imo. People realize that he inherited a mediocre group, and his recruiting gives the fanbase reason to be hopefull.

CDD is probably on the hottest seat in that he's out after a losing season. But he also is most likely to win coach of the year in the SEC too, and I expect him to get a lion share of the credit for turning around the program if he is succesful. As to the comment about him not even being safe next year with a winning season, couldn't disagree more. We might lose a ton on O and expectations won't be as high.

  • If we have learned nothing else we should at least know that contracts mean nothing when it comes to hire/fire. I would not put Richt in the safehouse simply because of new ink.

In the scheme of things, you're absolutely correct. However, given that the farthest we're looking ahead is one year from now, there are a few coaches that should be placed above Mark Richt in danger column.

Agreed. I think Muschump gets shown the door first between the two.

  • I agree with the consensus here. Even before reading everyone else's posts I felt Joker and Mustbeachump.
