SEC Expansion?

  • Maybe it's just me but West Virginia isn't an attractive candidate for the 14th team. Does anyone have a legitimate reason for West Virginia? I would argue for VT, UNC, NC State and even Maryland (at least you get Baltimore and DC tv market and you would think the Under Armour CEO would kill for Maryland to be in the SEC) are better candidates at this point. There's just so many better candidates than WV.

  • Maybe the SEC took one look at Maryland's unis Monday night and said "To hell with that idea"...

  • The back and forth over A&M made it quite apparent the SEC doesn't want to be seen as poaching. I suspect they don't want to wage war with the ACC. The Big East would appear to be a much easier target.

Personally, I'd much rather see Va. Tech come our way. But it doesn't look like that is going to happen -- at least today. Maybe tomorrow? LOL

I would love to see VT. Regardless, to add a 14th team, they're going to have to poach from another BCS conference. If you're the SEC, show your clout and go get any team you want and show that you're the best conference in the country. The Big East isn't an attractive conference and I would argue TCU would be the best team in the Big East (when they join) or even South Florida would be better.

  • I agree I would like to Va Tech but I beleive that Virginia would raise hell since they helped Va Tech get into the ACC. West Virginia is a good school though and that would open us more up north. I would like to get both schools.

It's been pretty well established that current SEC members are strongly opposed to the conference letting another school from their state into the party. That seems to mean no USF (or FSU) or Clemson.

  • WVU seems a better geographic candidate for the Big 10 but they'd never lower themselves.

SEC can do better as well by going to the North Carolina or Virginia markets.

I wished we could just stay at 12 teams. I've been praying that baylor could do something to keep the aggies from joining. I'm probably in the wrong here. JMO though.

Since it's pretty much a done deal with a&m, I would hope we can add a quality 14th team, not just some mediocre team.

Either way i'm against expansion in the SEC. Thoughts?

I'm not against expansion just because it's going to happen now or later. The SEC might as well get ahead while there are good, quality teams to add. Baylor knows they're the ones getting screwed and they really don't have a leg to stand on. The Big 12 and the Big East are probably going to be the first major conferences to go so might as well take what we can get. I just hope the SEC considers adding a couple of those Big East teams in basketball that don't play D-1 football...Georgetown, Nova, etc, if the Big East is no more.

Just to be clear, Villanova plays football - just on the Football Championship Series level ... not the BCS level. Think they actually won or played for a championship in the last couple years.

Been lots of talk in recent years about Villanova jumping up to FBS in football.

  • I know basketball is bigger up that way but the SEC can't make that decision based on basketball can it? I mean how many college basketball programs actually make money every year 10 tops and I feel that may be a high number. I like watching basketball but the SEC can't afford to get a team based solely on its Men's bball program. If so it needs to go after UNC or Duke those are the only two that makes sense from a bball only standpoint. JMO

The SEC needs some kind of infusion for basketball. UNC would be the logical choice if you take into account football and basketball. Basketball only, you need Georgetown or Nova. With Texas A&M coming to the SEC, women's basketball really wins w/ the SEC but they're not very good in men's basketball. Basketball doesn't make as much as football, but it still is a revenue sport.

depends on who the other 3 teams are - if we got VT , Mizz , FSU , UNC , WVU or even NC ST we should have some really solid new talent in basketball
