  • I would love to see who their source is. It seems like a lot of these rumors are fueled by message boards, but I do want to believe. I guess I've seen our luck in the gutter a little too long to buy into something this great happening.

  • I think the story by the Memphis News station has incorrect information about the Haslams. I thought Jim's son Jimmy (brother of Gov Bill Haslam) purchased the Browns.

    While it would be surprising to me to see an established news organization publish something that it had no credible sources for, your point is very valid. The fact that they were unable/unwilling to get basic facts of the story correct is mystifying, frankly.

  • Trying reallllllllllly hard not to get my hopes up about this. And I still believe Gruden is an extreme long shot, but today is the first day I have seen people with actual names and reputations (not just message board screen names and internet reputations) indicating specific details like this. That's a lot of smoke....

    Sometimes in the stampede to be FIRST with the story the FIRST thing to get trampled is accuracy.

    This is also quite true.

    In my opinion, allowing that stampede to affect the story is yet another strike against the story's credibility. Unfortunately. :(

    If a reporter in Memphis had this, does anyone honestly think that Wes, Kevin and Ryan wouldn't have it, too? Do you really think they wouldn't have reported it to their paying customers in one of their 25 daily updates? Seriously?

    Instead, the 247 guys have been remarkably consistent....believe it when you see it.

    Huh? That's why I said I'd like to see who their source is and that it's too hard for me to buy into any of these rumors.

    I check the site consistently to see if WRK have posted anything relating to the search.

  • My biggest question at this point, and I've asked Wes on Twitter, is: has anyone EVER heard of a booster giving a coach money/things like this as part of a hiring deal?

    Obviously, it's Haslam's choice to donate whatever he wants to anyone he wants, but a) I have serious trouble believing that it could be written into any sort of contract (i.e., you are given this ownership under the terms that you coach at the University of Tennessee for at least 4 years), and b) it seems like the sort of thing that would seriously change the future of the coaching profession.... that we would finally have reached the point where boosters somehow have direct, public authority/involvement in hiring/firing decisions.

    EDIT: NavyMike points out below that it's definitely not as simple as just throwing in part-ownership of a team. Outside compensation is apparently disallowed by NCAA rule. File that under "Things I felt like I knew but clearly didn't actually *know*."

    FWIW, I think even Wes would freely admit that there's no such thing as being the top contact of every source. If, and I do mean IF, someone close to the situation decided to tell someone in the media about it, there is no such thing as a guarantee that Wes would be that person's first contact, nor that Wes somehow has the only reliable sources inside the AD or elsewhere.

    Bottom line: I won't believe it until Wes confirms it, because he's the only member of the media that I, personally, feel like I know enough about to trust. But I don't believe for a minute that he is the only trustworthy person in the media, nor that he is guaranteed to get the story first simply because he has been diligent, circumspect, and honest. Don't kid yourselves - just because you subscribe to 247 or anywhere else does not mean you are somehow guaranteed to get any particular news before anyone else.

  • New info: The NCAA requires partial ownership would have to be donated to the university before given to Gruden. Per Rucker and josh ward.

    Gruden is a proven NFL commodity who could be a consultant to the Browns and it would be justified since he was a successful NFL coach and Super Bowl winner. It would be a separate contract. It would not, contractually, be that much different from an endorsement deal that most coaches have already. I believe it would be well beyond the reach of the NCAA for this reason. OrangeTex posted something similar to this in another thread I believe.
