Saban Isnt Going Anywhere

  • Why would he? He walks on water in that state (he already has a statue), his program is a machine (recruiting at an obscene level, the likes of which I have never seen), he is printing money, and he has a top notch administration that had the good sense to let an elite football program be a passport to the University.

Agree he isn't going anywhere, but to play devil's advocate, don't overlook the amount of ego it takes to be a coach at this level. He failed at the NFL the first time and people of his success rate don't like failing. Again, I agree with you he isn't going anywhere.

Agreed. If I had to bet, I'd say he stays, but there are several plausible reasons why he would leave.

Look at spurrier gettin the itch and leaving a perfect situation at UF.

In the coaching world, the NFL is the ultimate success. That's why guys like gruden don't even want to fool with college ball.

The other thing these days is the money coaches are paid now. I don't think you'll see coaches stay somewhere 20 years any more. Saban could take a shot at the nfl, make another 20mil and retire if he got fired in the nfl.

  • Competitiveness would be the reason he leaves. He could choose the place he wants to go and redeem himself from the NFL fiasco he had. Say he chooses to talk to the Bears, their QB situation is much better than what he had at Miami. His NFL tenure would have been much different had the Dolphin's doctors cleared Brees. Not sure if he goes but now is the time. Lots of teams need GMs and head coaches.

  • For whatever reason, I think he tries the NFL one more time. He has won so much at the college level, what else does he have to prove??? I may be wrong and he may want to stay and own every single college hc record, but I think he tries his hand at the NFL before he retires. May not be this year, but I think if he does make the jump, it'll happen within the next 2-3 years. Maybe the right job is open now that will make him make the jump now though.

I believe he stays also. But I will say this - guys like him aren't like you and me. Ego drives these guys. They don't believe in comfortable, they believe in identifying and meeting the next challenge head on. Saban preaches that to his team constantly. For them, its all about conquering the next challenge. I can guarantee you it bugs Saban that he didn't win a championship in the NFL. If an owner can put together a package that includes the right money, right quarterback and right personnel guy and any other ingredient he feels he needs to be successful then I think he'll at least take a long look at it. And if he does that, who knows?

I used to work for a venture capitalist that was like that. He had everything - money, fabulous homes and hunting preserves with their own airstrip to land his private jet, membership at Augusta and other top clubs. But he never rested and his only vacation was hunting and fishing trips to Central and South America or Wyoming, etc. with other business leaders to develop new business leads. He works 7 days a week constantly looking for his next deal or running the ones he has. He is 10 years older than me and damned near killed me with all the work I had to do. Those guys are just wired differently from you and me.

  • One intangible that the NFL is not going to provide for Saban that Alabama does provide: His wife loves where she is at. She is the toast of the town everywhere she goes over there. She is a big part of the community and she doesn't want to leave. I guess thats the joys of being a big fish in a little pond.

    Saban ain't going nowhere.

And for the Record Buck Fama!

This is the crap text message I got from a "friend" last night.... Happy New Year! Roll Tide #15! I deleted his number from my phone.

  • I think he stays also, but I didn't expect him to leave LSU either. Now IF Mack Brown were to step down and Texas with it's DEEEEEP pockets, things could get interesting. coffee

  • The only reason I could see him leaving this year is the success that Carroll is having right now. Remember we all said that Carroll at USC was a great college coach and now if he continues this success which it looks like he will since Wilson seems to be a good to very good quarterback we might have to change that to a good coach period. This is probably killing Saban knowing that their is a coach that is doing more then him right now. Before Carroll's success their hadn't been that coach in Saban's era that had success at both levels such as winning national championship and competing for a Super Bow, and if Carroll is able to finish this off win a super bowl. I know Pete had sanctions at USC but honestly when you still think about his teams you think National Champions. Given this I think Saban's ego could get in the way and say I can do that too and I'll do it better then he did. That's the only reason I can see him leaving for the NFL. Although I do think that Saban either this year or next year will get a serious offer from Texas and that might appeal to him to leave Bama. As at that point he might have won back to back national championships and could prove that he is the greatest college coach of all time. We all think he doesn't recruit now? Imagine Saban in Texas where he doesn't even have to leave the state to get players and in a weaker conference. He could pass every college coach for the title of "Greatest of All Time".

  • I think Saban stays at Bama. Part of my reasoning for that is because I believe he wants to be remembered and idolized like the Bear in Tuscaloosa. Like many of you have already said, Saban has a big ego, and can't tolerate failure. I'm sure his past failings in the NFL are unpleasant for him, but I also think that his drive to be one the greatest college coaches of all time is stronger than his drive to succeed on the professional level. A quick point about Spurrier; yes he went to the NFL, but he had already accomplished all that he wanted to accomplish at UF. He won conference championships, national championships, and managed to drive many people (including myself) crazy. I guess my point is that guys like Spurrier and Saban want to be remembered for all time, and the best way they can leave their mark is to take down and out programs (Saban: LSU and UA, Spurrier: UF and USCe) and turn them into powerhouses.

I would hardly call him a failure in the NFL. He was a highly respected assistant at Houston and Cleveland and went 9-7 his first year at Miami and barely missed the playoffs. If Culpepper hadnt blown out his knee they would have likely made the playoffs his second year.

His NFL career was unfinished, not a failure.

  • What can Texas give Saban that Bama can't? Bama has the $$$ to match any one as far as pay goes. Tradition.. Texas takes a back seat to Bama by a long shot in that one... I don't see him leaving for the NFL period! He has it set up the way he wants it!

  • I don't think anyone has a clue what Saban will do.

Maybe he is not proud of how he left the NFL? Or he wants to prove he is the best football coach period. It's like Jordan playing baseball, people who are highly successful often like new challenges.

Not saying I think he leaves or he would have a higher quality of life in the NFL, I just don't think anyone outside of him knows.
