Butch turned down the job when Dooley was hired, or was it Kiffin? If it didn't suit him then, he doesn't suit me now. Compare Davis' and Petrino college records. Davis - 122-79, .648 overall. Petrino - 75-26, .743 overall. Petrino was 5-6 in his first year at Arkansas and everything went up from there. Both would probably be great coaches but I just think Petrino would have more upside, and a bit higher risk. But Davis is not without risk, either. In reality, the coach selected will probably not include either of these.

Thanks for the response. I think you also have to look at Petrino's exit from L'Ville, ATL, and Ark. I don't believe Petrino will be hired (unless the fit really hits the shan), but I think Davis is more than qualified and is likely more realistic than a lot of the listed options (and also likely cheaper - given what has been said about Gruden - apparently $$$ is still a hurdle). We'll see.

These guys are not what Tennessee needs. These are hope and prayer coaches. Hope there good and pray they are not terrible. Very sad search if this is the best we can hope for. Kirby smart? Seriously? How many from the Sagan tree do we try out.

The only person that sounds stupid from this comment is you. Easy with the derogatory name calling. Not cool

Edit: Edited original post and quoted post and removed reference to it. Thx.

I definitely understand your argument. What Butch Davis did after the sanctions were announced at Miami was outstanding. You can't look at his record without understanding that after his first year (8-3) at Miami it was announced that there would be no bowl. There were numerous sanctions that followed including a loss of scholarships. He brought them back from the brink. But let's not forget that before he was Miami's head coach he was the defensive coordinator for two Superbowl champions. He brought Carolina back from the brink and most, if not all, of those guys that made Fedora look good this year were Davis's recruits.

  • Dave Hart needs to hire a HC who not only acts like a HC, but who looks like a HC too. Someone with maturity. Someone with experience, and someone that the players and assistant coaches will listen to without question (even if that means that certain players and assistants are somewhat affraid of the HC). When the HC says: "Poop!", the only acceptable discussion on the field should be "Where and how much, Coach?". I'm beginning to think that the majority think tank on most of the blog sites would prefer a HC that THEY would like to have have as a drinking buddy on the strip some day. Enough with the "pretty boy" mentality already!

I don't care how good your defence is .... if you don't have a HC that understands the purpose and importance of the front four plus center on offence .... you're never going to put points on the board and give that defence (even the best defence in the country) a fighting chance. Problem with that is ..... most of the HC's that are good with the front-line game are former linemen themselves .... and they won't fit in the average fan's front car seat very well when they go out to cruise the strip ... so they never develop any "Internet buzz" during the hiring process.

There are a lot of potential Vince Lombardi's out there (who's ONLY Head Coaching job was for a High School before he took the job with Green Bay) that would gladly accept the HC position at UT (like Coach Mark McHale) ..... but if the fans want someone who looks like they belong on the PGA Tour or looks like a TV color commentator .... then that's probably just what they'll eventually get ... and then what? ..... We're right back here in four or less years wondering who the next HC at UT will be .... THAT'S what.

    Whooo???

Welcome to the board Coach McHale!

Sorry bud but you know Notre Dame at one time hired a high school football coach for their program. It didn't work so well.

Greg Roman is a West Coast guy. He would be another one that would leave. We need someone that would stay here for a while if he wins.

Greg Roman owns land just outside Knox County I believe and his wife is also from here. I don't necessarily think he is a West Coast guy. He has several schools looking at him and I believe his interest is mostly in TN. I think he see's this as a top billing job. Now he may have dreams of NFL Coaching but it would require at least 3-4 seasons of success here and I am fine with that.

Ha Ha .... Thanks for the welcome .... but I'm not NEARLY Coach McHale .... however, Mark was my favorite blocker on the actual "Remember The Titans" team (not the movie version team) back in the day. The last time I spoke with Mark (and the only time in the last 25 years) was before Hamilton hired Dooley, at which time he indicated that he would gladly come to Knoxville ..... but ensured me that the "Politics Of Hiring" him at UT, weren't in his favor.

I think you may have misunderstood my earlier post. Lombardi had plenty of NFL coaching experience before he went to Green Bay, but as an assistant coach, not a HC. There are more similarities to Mark McHales career path (including the NFL) and Lombardi's career path .... than similarities to Dooley's, Kiffin's, Gruden's, Fisher's ... (the list goes on and on)'s career paths.

Gerry Faust - very nice man. Not a great hire for Notre Dame football, though.
