Wide receiver Josh Smith of nearby Christian Academy of Knoxville (Tenn.) gave Tennessee its second commitment from a local prospect in less than a week Thursday morning.

Ryan. This guy's numbers are incredible. 2900+ yds & 39 TD's in two years! Has good size and speed also. How is someone like him not ranked? Is it because of the competition that his team plays is maybe not that good?

Also, now that he's committed will 24/7 take another look at him?

No criticism here. I'm just currious.

  • I don't want to be a downer but I don't understand why we would take a commitment from Smith or Kendrick this early in the process. I'm all for bringing in home-grown kids but not if they aren't good enough to help us win championships. Maybe they will both turn out to be quality starters but with 1 offer between them both outside of UT, the odds are certainly against them. Y'all can criticize the 247 analysts all you want but they are very good at what they do. They are the best in the business, that's why I've been a member here for 22 months. As soon as I saw who the scouts were, I signed up. I trust our coaches' evaluations... but not more than the rest of college football combined with the best scouts in the business. That being said, I really do hope our coaches are the only people in the college football world who are right about these kids. I really do.

Both worked out for our coaches. I trust their evaluations.

  • Also remember this guys, if they currently rank 3 stars it is entirely possible to become 4 stars by the end of this season. Evaluations go on and on and on til they retire after college or NFL. Smith has been on their radars for awhile from what I understand, same with Kendrick. They waited til they could evaluate them in house, that means film was good enough to make them want to know more. Read the stories on both, lots of info there. 24/7 is a leader, our coaches are very good, with the capacity to be GREAT. Just think on this too, Dooley has made mistakes, but how many has he repeated? Do be so hung up on Ratings either, remember Tom Brady was riding the bench behind inferior QB's. Ratings judge potential, nothing is concrete, as in life some meet their potential, some don't, and then there are the few who shatter what was supposed to be their potential. Another point Look at Bryce Brown, 5 Star, super stud, but how'd that work out? Fizzled out in college, limped into the NFL on potential, lets see if $$$ will motivate him to succeed.

Alot of these kids go to other camps and that's why they get rated high. Look or wait on the kid from Ga. Athens I believe. This young man is going to show some people off. He didn't go to alot of camps either. I really believe DD and staff is doing a great job out there getting some great players to play in their system. Look last year Reviez is a walk on. I rather have him because he has heart. That's what we want. If you got heart you'll want to play harder.

I agree that the ratings can be off on some guys but if you look at the teams who have won national chamionships over the last decade, i would be willing to bet that those teams consistently had top 10 recruiting classes. In college, it's all about the talent.

The ratings are a great indicator of a player's talent. They are wrong sometimes but most of the time they are pretty accurate. I'm anxious to see what 247's scouts have to say about Smith after they take a closer look but as Ryan pointed out, evaluations are more accurate when done in a camp setting and Smith isn't going to anymore camps so I guess we'll just have to take Doolander's word for it.

  • Fulmer is criticized for ignoring local talent and Dooley is criticized for signing local talent. This makes me think of the old saying that coaches who worry about what fans think are destined to sit with them in the stands.

Usually a site does not rank a player until they start getting offers. Remember this is not a scouting service like UT and other staffs use. This site is just for the fans of college football, its top teams and to follow their recruiting.
