Smith liking Jones 'more and more'

Tennessee receiver commitment Josh Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., says his latest visit with new Vols coach Butch Jones did nothing to change his already-high opinion of Jones.

  • Good article. Sounds like he's ready to fight for the Big Orange. He needs to get on the phone/twitter/etc and help Butch and the gang reel in some more prospects before signing day. Recruit!

Man this kid deserves to be rated a 5 star recruit based on his attitude and commitment. I like what these coaches seemed to be selling. Heck I've even joined the "twitter" world I think. Don't really know how to use it but I have an account so this "pad" says.

  • I love Smith's attitude, but I wonder, with the limited number of official visitors UT can host this year, why Jones and the staff are using these visits on a couple of Knoxville kids that are firmly committed to the Vols.

It would seem that Smith and the other local guys in Knoxville and the surrounding areas could drop by campus and have the heart-to-hearts with the coaches and stuff like that. They could even join in on the weekend activities as unofficial visitors and go to a lot of the open functions the football team does during recruiting weekends.

Mentioned this in another thread a day or two ago, but I don't know if Tennessee could afford not to let the local commitments take official visits. Arkansas is trying hard to flip Smith and teammate Brett Kendrick, and Cincinnati is trying really hard with Smith. If the Vols didn't bring those guys in on officials, it might be seen as enough of a sign of disrespect to convince those guys to look elsewhere.

That makes sense, but I still wonder if there isn't some ways to convince the locals that they are high priorities without losing the official visits on them.

It seems that if a kid really loves UT, or any other school for that matter, they would understand the situation the new staff (and for that matter Dooley's staff) was hit with thanks to Kiffin and would work with them to get as many other prospects on campus as possible.

I've often wandered the same thing but I would say it's because of the NCAA and the potential of some sort of CRAZY, possible,potential,stupid@$$ violation if interrupted the wrong way.fingergun

  • And what I really meant to say was Josh Smith is a great get he stands out on film like a sore thumb, really excited about him and think he will be better used in CBJ's schem.

The local kids deserve the same red carpet treatment as the other recruits. No way they could get it on an unofficial. If Butch wants to own the state of TN, he has to be willing to pay the asking price. By the way Ryan, very nice piece on Smith. Great attitude.

BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!

  • Josh Smith is a big pick-up. Boy can seriously play ball. He's got good height. Still a little lean, though. Reminds me of ZRo. It took him three years to have an SEC season without getting all dinged up. Hope Smith can pack on some muscle and keep the speed. Vols!!

You can thank the NCAA for that one. Because of the rules surrounding unofficial visits, if a staff tried to prevent "local" players from taking OVs, it would essentially limit their access to the facilities and staff while on campus compared to those recruits on an OV. The last thing you want to do as a coaching staff is to make those local, in-state players feel like second-rate players, which is what preventing them from taking OVs would do. These coaches can't make extra phone calls or in-home visits with these recruits either.
