Some Jon Gruden Info...

  • Up here in Philly the name Jon Gruden is also being thrown around. He was a QB coach for the Eagles in the 90's, and more then likely Andy Reid will be fired, the other team being mentioned is the Cleveland Browns. The thing is wherever Jon Gruden goes he would want to call the shots, and would possibly want to be the GM as well. The Eagles I know wouldn't allow that, and the former president of the Eagles Joe Banner, and assistant GM Tom Heckert are both with the Browns, and I doubt the Browns would give him total control of player personel...

While Gruden is a long shot at Tennessee, and I am aware of that, but it's not out of the realm. Here at Tennessee he would have complete control of the team something he wouldn't get in the NFL.

  • Can't remember where I seen it, but Gruden also rumored to the Cowboys. Garrett more than likely will be fired unless a huge turnaround happens. Obviously, Jerry Jones will pay obscene money.

But to your point, Jerry won't give up control either.

  • Your correct, if Jerry Jones would have not been a control freak how many Superbowls do you JImmy Johnson would have won with the Boys. I understand Gruden wants full control in NFL but it is very hard to do both jobs to the fullest, somewhere one area is lax a little

Good point... Jerry isn't giving control to anyone but Jerry

Absolutely right. After his super bowl in Tampa he became GM and things kind of went down hill from there.

  • I think it much more likely, should Gruden want to quit his easy $4.2 million a year commentator job for the meat grinder that is coaching, that he returns to the NFL. He knows that league far better than the college game these days.

Even if Haslam and others turn on the donor spigot and pay the bills, how could they win a bidding war over the likes of Jones for Gruden's services?

I hear you. It is what he's familiar with, but it's also about control for him. If you read above most NFL teams won't give him total control of player personel. Gruden wouldn't go to Dallas that's a given. (Despite his man love for Romo)

  • I had heard Haslam bought the Browns. If that's the case then how would he feel about hiring Gruden there when UT may be needing a coach? Honestly he would probably care more about his new investment I guess. But I'm wondering if the Gruden talk started because of Haslam discussing hiring him for the Browns and it just got twisted into UT again....

    I always read, Driz!

If he wants control, and an owner wants him badly enough, he'll get control, or at least he'll be promised control. The NFL has more eunuch GMs than most people realize.

That's a lot of dough, but I think the chin is content on his little NFL today job he has, he don't want the stress again in either college or pro. Just my opinion though maybe he would come but highly doubtful

Gruden has ties to Tennessee. That's why he is being mentioned and it's not unrealistic. You're just throwing out Cowhers name, there is no substance to it. We could just throw out random names but I'd hope it doesn't turn to that, I hope when people throw out a name they at least back it up with facts

  • Setting aside the question of how serious a candidate he would be, I am curious about why everyone seems to think Gruden would be a good college coach? I know he was an excellent NFL coach. But his m.o. in the pros was an offensive savant who was a grinder. The knock on him was someone who hated coaching young players because they could not grasp the nuances of his west coast offense. He used veteran QBs who could go deep into his offensive playbook like Ty Detmer, Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson. He never develped a young QB. One of the main reasons the Bucs fired him was because they wanted to go young and rebuild and felt he wasn't a good fit for that approach. He was very rigid in his offensive philosophy. I am not sure how well he would adapt to the 20 hour rule and dealing with 17-22 year old kids. As Charlie Weiss can attest a schematic advantage will not take you very far in college football. I have no doubt he can recruit I just don't see him simplifying his offense to fit the college game.

Valid Points. But the talent he would bring to Knoxville would be unbelievable and usually the team with more talent wins. I'll take my luck with a roster full of 4 and 5 stars.

  • I've got tons of people texting me saying UT has approached Gruden and Dooley is content with the buyout. What the hell is going on?

    Voldog69

  • Here's something I think fans are forgetting, not thinking about, whatever.....Jim Haslam is the new owner of the Cleveland Browns. Major, major financial investment. New GM and probably a new coach at the end of the year.

University of TN. Disgruntled fans. Disgruntled alumni. Disgruntled boosters. Maybe a new coach at the end of year. But wait, there's a $5 million buyout. No problem...boosters got it covered. Done. Dooley's out. Let's go hire Gruden. Our boosters have it covered.

But is Haslam one of them? I say no. You have a billion dollar investment and you want to hire a bright, charismatic, proven coach. Gruden fits the bill.

So why would people think Haslam is going to steer Gruden towards UT when he has a billion dollar investment to protect. Let me say that one more time....a billion dollar investment. Not going to happen folks. The NFL is where it's all at. Money, fame, glory, and Super Bowl champions.

Yep. My point exactly. I think this whole thing about Gruden to UT is BS and maybe came from talks of Haslam wanting him for the Browns.

    dogassnat

  • Another forum said Haslam could be brokering a package deal. Jon to UT and Jay Gruden to Cle.

    Sounds far fetched.
