Sorry 247 Sports....I want ESPN rankings

  • I want to first say that I love this site/board and really enjoy reading what everyone is writing. Plus, I think Wes, Ryan, Kevin, and all of the other "special guests" do a wonderful job commenting and answering questions. Plus, they foster an environment that is very professional. I have never been on any other sites but I believe all the other posters who have and repeatedly state how great this site is.

However, I could absolutely care less how UT 2013 recruiting class is ranked on February 7th by 247 Sports, Rivals, and whatever other sites are out there. If UT was #40 on 247, #36 on Rivals, and #9 on ESPN, I would be ecstatic. Unfortunately, most recruits just don't care what recruiting sites say. Those recruits (and therfore I) only care about ESPN. Although, they are probably not as accurate as 247 they carry the biggest weight and this is very important for where the UT program is right now. I want to watch ESPN or ESPNU on February 6th and see "Tennessee" every 3 seconds on the screen because their recruiting class is in the top 10. I want every game in 2013 for the announcers to say that Butch Jones came in and brought in a top 10 class in relatively short amount of time as they play the Saturday night game on ESPN or ESPN2. On a side note, I would probably have a heart attack if UT actually had a top 10 class but I think you see my point.

Also, I don't want any of our recruits to announce before NSD...especially Lawson, Green, Bell, and any other top prospect. I want them all to announce on TV on February 6th with the hats. I want Vonn Bell with a Bama, Ohio State, and UT hat and for him to put on that orange hat. I want Green with Michigan and UT and to put on the orange hat. I want Lawson to have an Auburn hat, a Clemson hat, a Ole Miss hat, and a UT hat and put on an orange hat. I truly think that what this program needs is to have that HUGE statement moment that sells the university to recruits from 2014-2016.
This is also the reason I think that Lawson is the most important recruit as he is currently listed as the #2 recruit on ESPN (but I think #29 on 247).

Now in reality, these things probably won't happen this year with the possible exception of Vonn Bell as Green and Lawson are announcing early. However, if we can get a little momentum this season with the way things are shaping up for the 2014 "legacy" class I believe these things are a strong possibility next season and it would put the University of Tennessee on the map once again.

If we could just find a way to get Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit talking about Ryan Callahan, Wes Rucker, Kevin Ryan, and the rest of the staff....all will be right with the world!!

    GO BIG ORANGE!!!

  • I'm sure Bell, Green, Lawson, 247 & Mussberger will get right on that if that is what you want. Why not wish for a BCS Championship while you are at it?

Most of what you're focusing on is short term "window dressing". It's all show and no substance. If those recruits sign, the benefit comes from what they can provide on the field, not that they waited for NSD to commit. Actually, it's of more benefit for them to commit now and attract more interest from other recruits. We need help on the field next year. The biggest splash will be made if Jones can turn UT around and win games that he is not expected to win. That, coupled with his apparent enthusiasm, is what will lead to big time recruiting next year.

ESPN is terrible - Sports Center, the Website, the broadcasters, the recruiting ratings. All of it. Terrible.

I don't think it's window dressing at all as ESPN is only going to show 4 and 5* players on tv. Therefore, you are bringing very good players into the program.

I agree that winning on the field is the biggest splash and that will actually lead to more of what I discussed....which is essentially better players and more publicity for the program. Also, I think we would all prefer to win and let the recruits come as they may but as you are building back a program you need some moments like that to attract recruits. This also includes winning some games you weren't supposed to...which was Dooley's biggest flaw in my opinion.

  • I'd agree with you on the publicity and all, but I like being accurate. 247 has a killer staff nationwide, not just Kevin, Wes, and Ryan. I was really impressed when 247 hired away Keith, because I thought he was one of the best guys Rivals had. That's happening a lot. I like to know what I'm getting, and it doesn't get much better than here... Especially when they start doing the scouting evaluations

Musberger's evaluation of a pretty woman is why I wouldn't put much stock in anything he says. AJ McCarron's girlfriend has far too many teeth for me, those chompers are popping out like Mister Ed's teeth.

  • Not going to quote the entire OP here, but..how again does it help us to get all this pub ON signing day?? Wouldnt you want it BEFORE NSD to build momentum and get even more recruits? Moreover, if we are getting pub, it's because we got some big time recruits like Lawson and Green, NOT because of ESPN. You sort of have the cart before the horse there. ESPN would simply be reporting that we have landed some big commitments, ESPN, however, would not be the CAUSE of those commitments.

For me, if these elite recruits are going to commit, the sooner the better..

The answer is simple....these commitments on NSD will create buzz for the program for the 2014-2015 classes. Derrick Greens commitment on Saturday will not magically cause Hackenburg or M. Adams to suddenly be interested in UT this year. However, from a recruiting perspective if UT is on an 8 hour informercial on ESPNU on NSD it might open some doors for CBJ and the staff for 2014 or 2015. Now, winning is still the best recruiter but i am just talking about recruiting helping recruiting.

+1 (OP agrees with you....this is just about media/TV coverage/promoting the program)

Its why even Dooley did the ESPN car wash. I hope Jones allows the cameras into the program like KY bball and Duke bball and Bama football and many others are doing to get on ESPN and the U.

Too many recruits dont know anything about UT that even live with 300 miles of UT. You get our indoor facility on TV......they will beg for OVs and come unofficially and pick up the phone.

Only thing I would change with Seans post is the title to: Sorry 247 sports.....I want ESPN rankings 1 day a year.

i guess im not convinced that there is any carryover in pub from one year's recruiting class to the next. I think winning and getting other elite commitments in the class provide momentum that other recruits pay attention to...I think it would be much better to get the publicity BEFORE NSD to attract recruits for THIS years class, then rely on publicity after NSD to provide momentum for NEXT year's recruits..

No doubt winning is the #1.......I dont think Sean would argue that.

I think he is just saying great pub on national TV for hours helps too and that is something 2014+ recruits watch.

I agree with you.........I would love for Green to give this class momentum this Saturday and then Lawson prior to NSD.

I dont know..i guess it's really a theoretical point..obviously any good publicity doesnt hurt.., but i would be shocked if any 2014 recruit made decisions about schools even remotely based on the publicity that a school received from the previous years recruiting class... I suppose if it helped get us on a kids radar, then perhaps, but i dont think that's exclcusive to ESPN. And let's face it, if you have a top ranked class by Rivals or 247 or Scout, you are going to have a pretty highly ranked class by ESPN as well..
