    We just learned that lesson with Charlie Strong. TCU's AD has publicly stated that they have over $100M in reserves and they will spend whatever it takes to keep Gary Patterson.

  • Al Golden should have been the first choice after Gruden. Gundy was a horrible call. (1) he doesn't know D; (2) he is an OKSt guy through and through.

    Strong is solid, but the minute he made it obvious he was trying to use UT to get more $ from UL, UT should have walked.

    And spare me the nonsense about AUB and ARK getting who they want. That is BS. Do you really think Malzahn was choice #1? And ARK was turned down by Gruden and Gundy, and surely others.

    UT was and is the best available job.

  • can anyone confirm - Louisville counter offer is $4.7M per year? that is a load for Big East coach. UT going large after Strong is not the same as Alabama going large after Saben. (A Big East coach vs. NFL coach)...I wanted Strong but if indeed that rumor is correct ($4.7M) then what were we to counter that with? I mean $5M for Strong is too steep for me. Myer and Stoops makes $4.5 or so...

  • Here's my last post until we get a hire. Obviously our AD and Cheek are morons. People have played them like fiddles to get more money and years and control of their current spots. They didn't want to come here . However, there is one out there that has actually turned down Kentucky, Purdue, and now Colorado just to still be in the mix for our job. Yep, it's the guy none of us wanted . But you know what , at his point I say give Butch Jones the job. We can get him cheaper and hire an all star defensive coordinator . The man may have been beaten by Dooley but the man has also beat Strong. He has won everywhere he's been and I say give it to someone who wants to be here . Hire Butch Jones. Good nite all. May We all keep our sanity.

    I agree. Strong is a pretty good coach, but we shouldn't break the bank for him. This is the only really stellar season he's had at Louisville, and it included a couple of losses to teams that shouldn't have beaten him.

    Re Golden, he is young and can coach. He won at freaking Temple. TEMPLE! A school that the Big East kicked out because they were so bad.

    Re Gundy, why? Why do people think he is so good? What has he done, other than make a name for himself for telling everyone he's 40 and a man?

    I would have loved to have gotten Strong, for two reasons: (1) D and (2) recruiting. But there are a whole lot of guys out there that can do those two things.

    Fedora would certainly be a good hire. But now I'm not sure he'd come. I've talked so much junk to some of my Tarheel friends about Fedora coming to UT if we get that low on the list, if he is offered and turns it down, I may be house hunting in Tennessee by next week. Gonna run me out of NC. There is something amiss in Knoxville. Or in the words of that great philosopher, Elmer Fudd, "There's something skwewy going on."

    From what I've heard this week, I honestly feel Fedora is staying put.

    i almost agree, but petrino is a proven winner at the sec level and has never been in trouble with the ncaa! i say we offer him and put a breach of contract in his contract where if he screws up we dont pay a buyout!

    Exactly Right..We are courting coaches entrenched in plum cushy jobs..Paying Strong 4 million is just plain insane..Romans got all the creds and ability we need!! If Hart is stupid enough to offer another bush league Big East guy like Butch Jones I'll jump off a bridge..Jones is lucky he has the job he does..If Cinn. was in the SEC they would be lucky to have a 4 win season

  • Can someone please explain to me why Jimmy Cheek is involved in our football coaching search AT ALL??? I'm serious when I ask that bc apparently he is involved bc folks are blaming him for Gruden and now Strong. He is our Chancellor, and Dave Hart is our AD. Not sure I understand why he'd be involved other than tangentially.

    yep if you are going to gamble on a guy like dooley, jones, golden, you pay them like 2 mil tops with incentives for doing well and you give them a very low buyout to minimize risk, and then who knows the guy may turn out to be the next brian kelley!
